Would Singapore style laws work in the UK?

I am just inspired about Sinagpore, if the government were to bring certain laws from Singapore into UK (excluding the capital punishment but allowing corporal punishment) strict on criminals drug dealers robbers etc. fining those who try to make their town/city a bad place, would it work?
I ask this guy who is a bit of a chav and he said he'd kill himself if that ever happen, so I guess he's not happy with it, but would it be accepted by you and the majority?

If you start beating 'justice' into people then you are just as guilty, or are we saying state sanctioned violence is OK. Our towns are bad because of the law and because of poverty and deprivation. For example alcohol licensing laws or the drug laws. The capitalist systerm we live in also needs it's share of victims, for the privilaged few to feed off.

No. The laws in Singapore are in my view far too harsh for a reasonable society. They also criminalise action which shouldn't be illegal, such as homosexuality, vaguely-defined offences against "modesty", public speaking on religious or political topics, and so forth.

One of the principles of a free and democratic society is that people should be able to carry out their daily activities without undue government interference. Although some government regulation is necessary for a safe society, Singapore takes it too far.
