The most hassle free are the Saunas but prices of 600+ can be steep for a place like China, especially since the Yuan keeps getting stronger than the $.

I've been living here almost two years and in terms of feeling safe from being asaulted or robbed, I feel perfectly safe wandering around at 2am by myself in Shanghai. The only violence I've seen has been disputes between drunken businessmen and people fighting with taxi drivers after being over-charged. It really is one of the safest cities to visit at night

Being conned/ripped-off is a competely different story. Be on your guard at all times. Use what you are told by business employees / girls / business owners as information but don't rely on it. Scams are rife here. Never follow anybody or even talk to anybody who approaches you unsolicited on Nanjing Dong Lu and speaks English to you.

Make a night of it. Have a few drinks, wander around for an hour and go past the shop windows. See a girl you're interested in. Maybe keep walking and check out some other shops for something better (you can always go back in an hour's time). Tell them what you want and be clear that you've only got, say Y200 with you (keep Y100 spare in another pocket for a taxi/emergency).

Unlike the scam artists (justifiably) mentioned throughout this forum, the girls know why you're there. You know why you're there. There's no bullshit - except be alert for a second girl to come in uninvited and be very persistent that you do not want to pay double for both (unless you do want that!).

At two different shops I've been specifically negotiated Y50 (about $7) for amassage with happy ending. Both times I've received a half-hearted five minute massage and been told by the girl she is happy to continue but Y50 is just for normal massage and I need to pay another Y50 for the happy ending! I'm sure it's BS and I'm not assertive enough, but for $15 all-up it's no big deal and you can walk out smiling, knowing it's been a safe, scam-free transaction.

One last word. This type of thing is illegal in China, although many shops are in the vicinity of police stations. Police walk past daily and surely know what is going on. It's an open secret, I guess you could say. This said, please look around before going in and don't stroll into one of these places if a police officer is twenty feet away!

Thats right, the thing with Massage Parlours is even though I havent been in trouble yet - they are places frequented by usually the down beaten locals so its definately a good idea to not even carry your wallet or mobile. Just carry enough yuan like 300-500.

And dont forget your hotel card incase you get lost.

Near Shanghai Normal University - if I'm correct and you're talking about the area west of ZhongShan Park, there are barber shops galore and the price is a bargain. I travel that way every day and walk past many. It's a good place to get started.
For FS you're looking at Y200 and massage with happy ending Y100 is a rough price guide for you. I don't know about the sauna / massage places sorry. Unlikely to run into any trouble there but I'd advise with any activities of this kind in Shanghai to take with you only the money you're likely to need (say, Y300) and leave extra cash/credit cards/passport at home just in case.

Also pickup a Shanghai daily - call up one of the massage places from the classified - and in your power of speaking mandarin - bargain from the 1000 down to 300-400. Also entice them that u'll spread ur number to all ur foreign friends if they agree to this price.

I can speak Mandarin and English too, but I wouldn't start from BBS if I am a newbie. Not because I can't, rather I wouldn't dare to for 3 reasons:

1) Condition: The environment for BBS is generally worse than even a 1 star hotel in the U.S.
2) Safety: The BBS is usually located in a less affluent neighborhood. Also these locations are more likely to be raided by the police than the Sauna or hotel operations.
3) Safety: Because the girls working in places like these have less choices and might have to serve people who aren't very sophiscated/clean. They might have done things that are more risky than the Sauna/Hotel girls. I wouldn't want to get lucky that way.

That is not to say there are no advaneforum.xxxes for the BBS. A couple right off top of my head:

1) Price is cheaper. 1/3 or even 1/4 compared to Sauna/Hotel/call girls.
2) New talents. You are more likely to find fresh meat in these places than elsewhere.

I have shopped in BBS before; however, I insisted taking the girl(s) back to the hotel even if I had to pay twice or 3 times more plus taxi fare. If you can speak Mandarin, it is easier to negotiate that.
