Well, as I said, it was a similar treatment that helped me escape the emotional agony I was in. Was I gullible? Was I "cured?" I say I was cured!

That is the power of placebo enhanced by the power of misdirection so frequently used by con men and magicians. If a person wants to believe something helped them for X reason, they will do so even if the facts indicate that X reason is utterly false and that far more conventional explanation is available. Or, as the old saying goes, "Your faith has made you well!"

Just because something is totally unprofessional (and I believe this falls into that category) doesn't mean it doesn't have the desired effect. And just because the desired effect was achieved, doesn't make it okay to be unprofessional. There are effective, professional, ethical ways to attain the desired effect.

The "old saying" comment is totally unrelated, so to bring that into a professional conversation kind of denigrates others' belief systems, which is also probably not very professional.

In my case, I'd say the FACTS prove the result utterly POSITIVE. If you want to denigrate a method that acquired positive long-term results, that is your prerogative. However, you have no right to call it a placebo or to call the people who performed the treatment that cured me "con men and magicians." (or con-women since they were female) By doing so, you are displaying yourself as a narrow-minded fool. I suppose you also consider Reiki a sham?

I'm glad you had positive results. I wouldn't ever subject myself to aggressive behavior like that when there are far gentler methods to achieving the same result. I also believe that the person has to be 'ready' for the improvement, whatever method is used for emotional issues.

(I still think it is a sham - at least the video I watched and that is my only experience with it)

You incorrectly assume that my skepticism is a sign of narrow-mindedness. Instead of opening a dialogue about the implications of my statements and investigating whether they have any veracity, you chose to attack. Instead of respond in kind, I have provided some explanation and examples for the specific language in my prior post, which I hope you will view/read. They will provide you with some food for thought and a better understanding of my statements.

You say you experienced something similar to what is shown in the video clips, and you feel that you received some benefit from the experience. Okay, it helped you. I didn't dispute that.

The amazing thing about the brain is that, if it believes that something is helpful, you will probably benefit from it whether it functions as advertised or not. That is the nature of placebo, and I do not denigrate that. Placebo effects are greatly magnified (1) when we don't know we are receiving a placebo treatment, and (2) when the placebo is presented as bigger, more complicated, or somehow more powerful.

I think it is foolish to poo-poo the very real value of placebo.

Everything I see demonstrated in the videos appears to be a sham treatment, but the "clients" all perceive some benefit from the experience. I don't deny their perceptions, but I do not believe that the "emotional liposuction" experience works as claimed. All of the receivers entered the experience expecting "something" and the only explanation provided to them is that provided by the demonstrator. Therefore they are seemingly given a choice between (1) receiving benefit, OR (2) not receiving benefit, BUT either way his explanation is never presented in a manner that is to be questioned by the receiver. This is a classic method of manipulating perceptions in a manner akin to that shown in the Penn & Teller clip above. In entertainment, that's fine... but in a perceived "therapy" session, that is highly unethical. In this case, the demonstrator also happens to be painfully unprofessional, a double hit to the credibility of legitimate healers everywhere. t013
