Total case studies for reflexology

I'd really appreciate as many replies on this as possible, as I really want to know the total of case studies that each awarding body/college/course requires a reflexology student to complete to pass and get a qualification. I have the feeling mine is nowhere near enough and am not happy about passing with so few.

So if you could tell me how many people how many times each of you had to do and for what qualification or awarding body, I'd be ever so grateful.

2 years ago for ITEC, we had to do 64 case studies... made up of 10 people x 4 treatments that had to be completed written up to include their background, lifestyle, presenting problem and treatment finds/ conclusions.

we then had to do 24 people only once each.

I'm currently doing the AOR exam and must complete 60 treatments (of which there must be 6 people done six times, and the others can be one offs or more treatments for those people). On top of this I have four practical exams.

I believe the ITEC exam is a similar format.

A friend of mine who is doing the VTCT qualification must do 24 treatments.

I think each examining body has their own guidelines about this, although some schools will demand more if they think it is appropriate.

3 1/2 years ago I did the AoR which was 60 treatments so it doesn't sound like it's changed much. If you don't feel that yours is enough just do more!! No one's going to penalise you for that, or even just do them for your own peace of mind. I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding volunteers for free treatments!!

Hi Emma.

I would have to agree with Sarah. The British School of Reflexology (with whom I qualified in October last year) said that you needed 72 full and effective treatments (6 treatments each, on 12 clients) including consultation, diet, lifestyle, etc... (this was as well as all the mini treatments to get your hands used to it, and to get you used to treating feet. I think I did about 50 of those!!!!) The most important were the 72 treatments, but I ended up doing about 86 because my husband and children were so willing!!!!!

It will not do you any harm doing more than you are required to do - My advice though, would be to make sure that you hand them ALL in. Don't feel as though you only need to hand in the number they require. You will have worked bloomin' hard, so let them see how hard you have worked. Honestly, they WILL NOT mark you down for it. Hi. I did ITEC last November and as above I had to do 64 case studies fully written up with findings at the end for each client and for my own experience. I also had to do a three hour written paper and a one hour practical, but bear in mind I have already done a three hour a and p paper, a three hour a,p and massage paper and a three hour aromatherapy paper with one hour practical exams for the massage and aromatherapy....phew!

If you are doing VTCT then you can always go on and do the advanced course. It is the practical experience that you need as the others say. Good luck.

Hi Emma,

My examining board was IEB which enables you to join the International Federation of Reflexologists.

When I did it in 2002 the criteria were quite specific.

A minimum of 72 sessions that had to be made up of made up of:
1 client of 12 sessions
4 clients of 8 sessions each
7 clients of 4 sessions each

The sessions for an individual client had to be done weekly over consecutive weeks although there was a little flexilibility in this requirement.

1 client had to be an older person 65-70
1 client had to be a child
At least one client of each sex, i.e. not all men or all women.

It was a challenge but I felt that the experience was worth it.

I agree that's it's worth submitting all of your casework. I actually did 100 sessions in all (72 officially required), I submitted them all and got a Distinction.

Gussie, I wonder if you'd mind asking your friend whether he/she is doing the Level 3 Certificate in Reflexology Techniques or the Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology, and if it's the Diploma, could you ask what the Diploma students are covering apart from the sequence, treatments, contraindications, case studies, etc (you know, the usual things to be able to do a reflexology treatment)? I know they do business plans, but I don't know if that's the only difference or whether there's more to it.

Would you mind terribly? Thanks ever so much if you're able to.

I have done the ITEC we had 28 or 29 individual case studies to do and 4 treatments for 10 people making so 70ish although i did do more...

they have changed the rules on ITEC since i did it. i do believe that the theory exam is shorter because A) its multiple choice and B) not much A & P, as that should already have been done a s pre-requisite to doing reflexology. wonder why they have reduced the number of case studies... if nothing else, it makes you get your hands on pleanty of feet!

The more case studies you do the better - I think we all agree on that. Didn't know ITEC had cut them down too - what is the point in that? I only did mine in November and did the 54. Most colleges have changed over to multiple choice, but some still are doing the written paper, and yes, you do need the a and p to get on the course. I think it is a shame they have done it, sorry no offence to anybody, but they should be raising the standards surely?

It goes to show, doesn't it, how little they (the different awarding bodies and/or colleges) agree. Like all of you, I think the more the better, and JillB's IEB sounds especially good to me: a real variety of treatments where you're bound to really see the difference it makes to treat someone 4 times to the results you must get from treating someone else 12 times! There must be something good to learn from that, before you start as a professional.

Mine is quite limited: 6 people 4 times each, although as suggested by some of you, I'm doing more than that, as I feel that at least in some cases, it's needed.

I still find it difficult to write it.

Hi, the VTCT Level 3 diploma (formerly Advanced) varies from college to college. My college covered Hand & Ear Reflexology, basic Kinesiology, Crystal work, Colour Therapy and basic Iridology. We also learnt a different routine to the usual VTCT routine, this time doing one foot at a time and working down the foot, rather than going from system to system. However we didn't cover Vertical which I know some places do. I think it totally depends on your tutor and how much work they are willing to put in.

We also had to treat 10 people 4 times as case studies, as well as covering range and having three assessments. We also had a huge amount of essays!

If the VTCT Reflexology Course is similar to the VTCT IHM course I have just completed, then it is a joke!!!!

I'm so glad I qualified (with distinction) with the IFR and the IEB back in 1996.

If it's of any help to anyone, I completed my ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology in September 2004. For my case studies I had to treat 10 clients, four times each, plus an additional 24 treatments (not to include the 10 case study clients). But I think the rules were changing just as I was finishing the course - not sure that you have to do the 24 additional treatments any more.

This always makes me feel inadequate as all my courses are VTCT! It's all the colleges around here do. I have had good tutors and mediocre tutors as well as dedicated therapists who want to pass their enthusiasm on and who do a great job. I did a diploma in A&P, Diploma in Reflexology, Certificate in Swedish Body Massage and am currently on with Aromatherapy (at a different college). I feel that my tutor gave me a grounding in reflexology and I have worked at it since, doing other courses etc and could probably teach her a thing or two now. We had to do 6 x 6 case studies with full write ups. Several assessments on various types of person (the dreaded ranges) - we were assessed each time we provided a treatment, which was every week after the initital theory stuff was out of the way. Loads of assignments, written questions - which cannot be strictly called exams but are really - you have to get 100% and go back a maximum of three times until you do! I feel that I personally put everything into it and learnt everthing I possibly could and continue to look out for more learning opportunities. I think I am a good therapist but always feel self doubt when I read all this stuff about how the VTCT courses don't quite "cut the mustard".

It's always nice when Candie comes to our rescue and tells us about her wonderful treatment from someone who was VTCT trained.

You are right Pauline, it is down to the people who teach you and the way they go about it, and it sounds as though you have great teachers. Just believe in your own experience.
