To answer your question, I've actually done both in the past, ie I've randomly picked therapists from Gumtree and phoned them to see if they could give me an appointment at the last minute (usually contacted 2 or 3 before managing to get an appointment). And more recently I've contacted a therapist that I've seen before to see if he could give me a last-minute booking.
As a therapist I hate getting last-minute bookings (because I prefer my life to be organised and well-planned!! LOL), so I'm always apologetic when I try to get a last-minute booking for myself. But because I know how that 'massage need' can just hit you sometimes, I am completely understanding and non-suspicious of clients who request last-minute bookings from me.
In answer to your other question - I always arrange to have a massage in my own home. I just prefer it that way - it means I can relax afterwards without having to worry about getting dressed and driving home.
