Thanks for the information..Now I remember ...I was on a tour to SZ once and we went by bus. We go dropped off to go through HK custom and then get back onto the bus and then to another where we go to Chinese custom..Since we were on a tour after we went through Chinese custom the bus pick us up and took us to LoWu.

You might want to check out Crown Plaza which is right behind Shangrila. It is a 4 star hotel. Not too many hotel around Shangrila area.

You can arrange a car with driver in Shenzhen. But it is going to be quite expensive unlike cambodia, thailand or philippines.
If you are going for mongering why do you need a car. You can take a taxi and it is cheap.
You cannot drive a car in China unless you have China driving license. They do not recognize International driving permit. Getting a driving license in China is next to impossible for non-chinese.

Taking the bus from Mongkok takes you to Hua long border,if I pronounced it right. The bus stops at the Hongkong immigration first and picks you up on the other side and takes you to Chinese immigration. It is cheaper and faster than the train. Although the train takes you to the heart of Shenzhen city.
Once you get into China do not accept any rides from people. Go over the overpass to the other side of the fence. If you do not know just follow the people. From there you can take a metered taxi. Pay the meter charge only.
The mongkok bus stop right on Nathan road on a cross street. Next time I will remember the street name. Just ask people and they will point you to the right direction. This border is open 24 hours unlike Lowu border which closes at 12 midnight.

If you have a flight to HK you can take a train to SZ or depending on where you are staying in HK ( not everything is that expensive) you can take a fast ferry boat, it is cheap, I think. Happy Hunting

I don't know if that is wise, brave or foolish bro. I have been to SZ several times and China many many times, but can't imagine wanting to take the risk of driving there. I'm sure the hotels can set you up but not sure what the laws are regarding the license laws. take care and be safe.

No, you go through customs at a different point than if you take the train, I think at the Wang Kong crossing. You come out in China, and from there you're basically on your own to fend off the touts, I didn't get a terribly good look because as soon as I found my (HK) friend who made it through customs comparatively faster, she guided me along the overpass and down to a taxi zone, hailed a cab and gave the driver his orders.

It seemed like some sort of bus terminus though, there were overhead walkways and ovals of concrete waiting areas which suggested that and/or a taxi pick-up & drop-off zone. There were also numerous tour buses on this side of the customs building.

Oh right, you need to get off the bus once to clear HK customs, get back on, and disembark again at the Chinese border; might sound like a bit of a hassle but it all goes over fairly quickly, we were under 10 minutes exiting HK and no more than 10 getting through the crowds at the Chinese border. Actually I was the only whitey on the bus so clearing HK customs, I was the slowest one and it really only took me maybe 5 minutes, then once the bus filled up off we went.

I need help in SZ, I often go there for business call, I could get along quite well; but the problem that if I want to travel, it is so troublesome to take cab to have my fun, I am used to rent a car with a driver in other countries I go to.
Would any kind soul bro be willing to share any info where and how much it is to rent a car for day, a safe company, that any bro used often?

I could care less about the lobby. I usually eat at restaurants outside and why would I be hanging out there?

The important thing is rooms must be clean and would be nice if it came with amenities like lcd, nice furnishings etc. If you can recommend something else, but close to Shangrila location, that would be perfect.

Or even better, take a bus from Mongkok, it's a bit cheaper, it's faster (no stops) and you even get a guaranteed seat both ways. There's this little kiosk on the street, you buy the tickets there and wait for the bus in the same spot. I forget the exact intersection, go up Nathan Road and around Arran Street I think, (somewhere around there) on the West side. Ask a local if you need help. They also have these buses leaving from other locales in HK but I really can't remember where, I just recall seeing different departure plates on different buses painted in the same company's colours. Ask at the tourist info desk or something if need be.

You might find a lot of travellers in the customs building when taking the bus but even if you're in a long queue you should get processed within about 5~10 minutes, they are very efficient as was pointed out earlier.

Unless you have your heart set on Shangrila, I think there are better hotels, cheaper and more girl friendly. It depends if you like the large lobby of a 5 star hotel or a better room at 3-4 star hotel. I prefer a 3-4 star hotel with a larger room at half the cost of the 5 star hotel.

Going to be in Shenzhen from April 8th, 2009 onwards for fun and games. Anyone want to chill together? Always safer in pairs. Looking to stay at either Shangrila or somewhere nearby. If a local is willing to meet up, would be happy to buy a round or something for the help.

Btw is Shangrila worth it? The room I had last time was kinda worn down, really poor especially in comparison to the ones in Singapore and HK. Anything nicer but in the same proximity to the railway station?

Ah Shenzhen. Been there once before and was the first time with two girls in the same room. Bubbly and enthusiastic is all I can say. Those pictures I took are momentos I'll keep forever.

What you are saying is not that many people on the boat so there is a shorter line for immigration..where as on the train there are lots more people so the lines are longer to go through immigration..Therefore take the route that is most convenient for you
