Serious question from a new student

Perhaps as much as you would like to talk with him about massage school maybe you should consider what you say or how you say it. I have been with my husband for 20 yrs now and when I was in school he was okay with me being naked, being massaged by classmates, but I made the mistake of telling him once about how an instructor addressed an issue of my body (IT Band) and how he demonstrated on me and helped another student and he became very uncomfortable. I realized that it just wasn't worth sharing certain aspects that I knew would make him upset.

Just as he doesn't share every single thing he does within his job - I did not share every single thing that happened while I was in school.

I have only been out of school since September, and truthfully my husband does not want me working on men. He forbid me from working on male family members (except my son and father LOL). I simply reminded him that if they came to me that I had to uphold confidentiality so that he wouldn't know if I did work on a male in the family or a male in general. We have agreed to not discuss my work!!!

Now, on the same end I will also tell you that my dh was a little freaked out about some of the things I told him I did as a doula too. He was just as uncomfortable knowing that I was touching women in certain ways during their labors and births so again I just do not share those things that I know make him uncomfy.

Interesting and complex subject. Seeing that most of the posts on this subject have been from female Therapist, I thought you might want to see a male therapists view. I'm currently in my 3rd year of a 3000 hour Massage Therapy program, and I've seen this happen more than enough times. Your boyfriend has to realize that this is a proffesion some what like a Doctors, we are here to help people, and our ethics de-sexualize what we do. If hes paranoid about other people seeing you naked, he obviously has some issues to deal with, and if he can't get over it, you'll have to decide if you want to be with him more than becoming a MT, and have the opportunity to find somone whom feels secure enough to have a significant other that touches people for a living, or stay with him and deal with it somtime in the future. It sounds like he's pretty insecure. In my school we had a class where everyone partnered up and stripped to thier underwear so that we could see Fascal lines with posture and learn how to soft eye scan properly, plus look at gait. It wasn't really that big of a deal because we were all doing it to learn and everyone respected each other. It is just the human body after all, and we all are pretty well the same in the end. If your program teaches breast massage, what will he have to say to that? Just some stuff to think about.

We did something similar in my kinesiology class. All the females were expected to wear shorts and a sports bra so that we could work on palpation skills. At first it was a little uncomfy (especially for me because I do not have the most attractive body from having seven children LOL). We all got over our inhibitions really quickly!!!
