massage contra-indications

wow Rima, they really are tightening up...diabetes - never needed to turn anyone down yet and ITEC havent even bothered to make the distinction between the different control methods...ashtma...as long as they have meds should be ok, trapped nerves, oh now i find that just incredulous!!!!!

Scar tissue, 2 years for major, well I will be having mine done as soon as they are properly healed etc in around a month or so albeit very gentle to help with any adhesions etc, just doenst make sense....

it would seem to me that ITEC is more concerned with qualifying lots of people to do not a lot and therefore they are avoiding more complicated learning and responsibility....

this is a great discussion and a really important one too.

I have met many other therapists who were told emphatically on their courses never to massage a pregnant woman and never to massage someone with diabetes. I have never heard of anyone who was told not to massage someone who was 'well built'

I did my massage training in the US and the vast majority of folks I massage were overflowing off the table. We were told that as long as they had no medical conditions from their size they were ok to be massaged.

I also do scar tissue release and do it as soon as the scar has healed usually anywhere between 4-6 weeks.

There is a great book called 'The Massage Therapists guide to Pathology, Ruth Werner. that has great info on what you can and cant do....

I think the thing is that courses will have rules so as they dont get into trouble or sued. There are many advanced courses out there that folks can attend to specialise in palative care or pregnancy etc. I think also that there are so many courses available now that perhaps standards are slipping... just a thought.

great topic.......... I would massage a large person no problem and have done many times..........as long as their med condition checks out or do do energy work first or seek GP advice.

In reply to Ruth, re massaging over recent scars, im presuming you are working with myofascial release, as any other type of massage over recent scarring is definately contraindicated, as it can reopen the wound. We use myofascial release on new scars (after ops etc) as it really does help with the healing of it, but would never advocate the use of any other type of massage.

Do some advanced massage training in injury prevention massage and learn some hands free techniques - very effective for the client too, with much less stress on hands, wrists and arms.
