learning the muscles ( O I A ) HELP!
I like to you use the Coloring Book Plate because each page of muscles is already grouped according to function. For each coloring book page I suggest going through them step by step - to create a mental framework:1)First Review Bony Landmarks.2)Do Terms Of Movement For The Joint They Move.3)Ask yourself -What Bone(s) Do They All muscles on this page Insert Into? What function do the muscles on this plate share?4)General Picture Identification: What Muscles Are Posterior, Anterior, Lateral, and Medial. *Very important to get visual identification solid before getting too specific with O, I, & A5)Generally, Which Way Do They Pull? Keep in mind- Muscles Are Like Puppet Strings.6)Then and only then do I start to look at The Specific O, A & I.7)Lastly - if you have tiem- look at the relationship of the muscles on the plate to other muscles or structure. Are these muscles deep or superficial? What structures are medial, lateral. etc.More Suggestions1)Involve ALL YOUR SENSES AT THE SAME TIME: Visual, Auditory And Kinesthetic. Example: ย a)Look at a picture of the muscle. ย b) Then Touch its origins and insertions on yourself or a ย partner. ย c) then Place an elastic band in the same location as the muscle. ย d)Do the action of the muscle replicating it with band. ย e)Do the action while trying to palpate it on yourself or others (resist the action to have the muscle pop up)f)Then draw the muscles on each otherRemember to Say the name, the origins and insertions, and actions out loud as your studying2) I Always use and move the skeleton. Locate a muscles origins & insertions on the skeleton, without knowing it, and using an elestic band, attempt to determine what it might do when it contracts. ย Muscles simply pull like strings of a puppet, so recognizing a picture of a muscle means you know its actions!3)Arrange muscles into groups with common attachments & actions. Once grouped, find exceptions to group: Such as: all adductors insert onto the posterior femur except gracilis; or - all rotator cuff muscles insert onto the lesser tubercle except Subscapularis4)Break down a muscles name, may give descriptive information that makes it easier to remember5) USE MNEMONICS ย It's a bag of tricks and word games designed to help a person remember data, especially isolated, unfamiliar details--the type we have the hardest time holding onto. examples -Biceps Brachii Origins:You walk SHorter to a street CORner. You ride LONger on a SUPERrhighway.-SHort head originates from CORacoid process.-LOng head originates from the SUPRaglenoid cavityBrachioRadialisFunction- Its the Beer Raising muscle, flexes elbow, strongest when wrist is oriented like holding a beer.
