I want to train as a reflexologist, any help??

Thanks for the info Rosie, hopefully I shouldn't have too much trouble with midwives as I'm an ex-staff nurse and I know quite a few of them. The reason I'm interested in this course is because I've had so many queries from pregnant ladies and I've been treating my sister who's just about to deliver. I almost trained as a midwife myself a few years ago so I feel it's a bit of a calling.
I agree with you about the misinformation there is out there regarding reflexology - last week I read an article in a health related magazine which said reflexology is out if you have diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, high blood pressure or are pregnant - sure rules out a lot of people who I'm quite happy to treat [>:]

OOh err everybody!!!!

I trained with the British School of Reflexology, started off thinking that I was going to do the IEB exam, 3/4 of the way through the school changed to the APNT (who are affiliated to the BCMA) The work was BLOOMIN 'ARD!!! As was the exam, and after training for a year I was Shattered. If I had to re-train, I don't know whether I could do it all again[&o].

I read the bit about Susanne Enzer with great interest, as she's comming to demonstrate and teach her Maternity techniques to my local AoR group on 26th June.

I wasn't too sure weather to go or not (you know - blokes and pregnancy...... ), but now I've read your glowing report - I'm signing up!!

A few weeks ago I went to a healing fair where there were several AOR reflexologists working together.
All were dressed in their normal clothes - woolly jumpers with long sleeves. Long hair hanging over their faces. The one I had a treatment from had her watch and rings on. One of them even answered her mobile half way through someones treatment.
No consultation was done and i never saw any of them wash their hands between clients. I know it was only a taster treatment i had, but the treatment itself was bitty and 'any old how'. No creams were used.

On another stall was a group of VTCT students from a local adult FE college doing various therapies. What a difference. Hair tied back; smart, clean uniforms; hands cleaned with wipes between treatments; consulation form. I had a IHM and it was lovely.

I dont want to 'rubbish' any ones particular qualification, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. If I was a potential client looking for a reflexologist, I know who I would choose.

You may not want to 'rubbish' any particular qualification but by posting this about AoR Reflexologists and saying who you know you would choose for Reflexology you have just 'rubbished' the AoR qualification. I am AoR trained and I wear a white tunic embroidered with the AoR logo that they promote to their members, wear my hair tied back, rings and watch off, always wash my hands, etc, etc (you get the point). This is the way I was trained and how all Reflexologists will be trained by the AoR. However it is then up to each individual practitioner how they conduct themselves and their practices after their training, although we should all be following any guidelines and ethics we signed up to. If you want to help this industry I would suggest that you contact the AoR and let them know how a few members were letting the orgainisation down. They are the minority as I'm sure others will agree.

Hey go easy on rigby he/she is only relating an experience they had and how it has affected how they would choose a Relfexologist. I don't think they were trying to rubbish anyone. [&:]

However, I can imagine how it will have made you angry Sarah, knowing that it makes things look bad for AOR qualified people, I see plenty of it when people say that the VTCT qualification isn't as good as the others, e.g. AOR, ITEC,, it hurts doesn't it. As you say it's up to the individual how they conduct their business after qualifiying. Which only goes to back up the thing about the qualification you have not mattering, it's the individual that counts. That's why it gets my back up when people go on about 'regulation' and who will be 'recognised', so I best shut up about that one 'cause I might spontaneously combust[]

I must admit though if I saw anyone 'claiming' to be AOR qualified and acting in such a manner while giving treatments I would be suspicious! The AOR are so well respected and I think anyone who had gone through their training wouldn't let themselves slip into such an unprofessional way. I'd want to see their certificate!!

i have to admit that when i give treatments at home, i am a little more relaxed in what i wear, although i always look clean and tidy and conduct the treatment professionally.

whenever i am somewhere else, whether it be at the health club where i do stints, or in a leasure reception giving taster treatments, i wear my white top and black trousers with white shoes... and my badge.

i dont see it as representing my exam board... i see it as representing me and professionalism. mind you, reiki i guess would be different but even then one should be keen to appear as tidy etc as they can. and white is worn for protection also...

I agree which all postive things being said... my opinions are outrageous so I wont even go there but lets just say I wonder who all the gverning bodies think they are, iwould be totally peed off if any of them told me how to apply my business or use my qualifications..I want to be a Master of my Trade...not a Jack of all trades . .so I'd tell them where to shove their retraining too if the AOR bring it in that we need so many new points annually to registerwith them.
Work hard & you will reap the rewards no matter who the governing body is once you qualify you can advance yourself . .

Sulis..i would love to do the Susanne Enzer cours is it the one in Cornwall yu are doing ..its a bit too far for me..
