My last few days in China, I was starting to get really bored. I had strained my plumbing to the point where I couldn't work it anymore, and I was suffering from the runs from Chinese Hotpot (it was either the raw egg, or undercooked tounge or intestine).

Now, about 48hrs in being back to LA, I find myself missing China again. Watching that weird interactive music channel they have was fun, as was seeing hundreds of pretty girls roaming the streets come evening. The idea of being able to go hop in an elevator and being able to choose from 3-400 girls can't be beat either. There is so many young prettty nice girls around, that you start taking it for granted. Damn, I miss China.

Anyway, some other random stuff:

QQ
Really weird MSN, Instant Messenger type thing that is huge in China. I think instead of a name, you get a number. Alot of girls were offering me their QQ number, but since I can't read Chinese, I declined.

Also, I think the music channel on TV is somehow QQ related. If somebody knows where I can get those cheesey flash animation music videos they have, please let me know. I'm already missing them.

Cell Phones
Unless you want to turn on international roaming (assuming you have a tri-band capable phone) and get chraged $3.00 a minute like I did, you will probably want to get a prepaid local sim card while you are there. The guys I was with got one in Hong Kong, and one in China. If you have a local China number (I believe the local area code was 137) the girls are more likely to call YOU for service, once you get their number. Some girls tried calling me (I TRIED explaining to them they shouldn't) as soon as they got my number to test it out I guess. They will probably freak out when they realize they were calling a U.S. number and probably got charged 100 times their normal rate. On the plus side though, everybody uses prepaid in Dong Guan, so they at least won't get billed more than they have.

Or as I know it "Chinese Viagra." That thing got me up, but only to like 70%, and then after the first time, the little homey never wanted to wake up again. I don't know if it was my diet, fatigue, or this pill, but I would advise against taking it if you want to play it safe. I also got a bad headache and had night sweats around the same time, but also, I can't be sure the pill caused it.

The runs, Lomotil, and you
When I got the runs, I tried a couple methods to stop my frequent visits to my buddy John. Not until I got to the Hong Kong airport, and purchased some Lomotil from Watson's, did my stomach finally rest. Also, in retrospect, if you are not sure if the restaurant has bottled water or not, and you MUST drink water, ask for HOT water (kills the bacteria). Naturally, also avoid raw foods, especially those that are stored at room temperature (damn hot pot eggs).

To shave or not to shave
Unfortunately, I don't really notice things like pubic and underarm hair too much. I believe that alot of the girls DON'T shave though. Also, my two sauna girls were pretty tripped out that the boys were bald, and I was otherwise trimmed. For girls who lick @$$ for a living, you would think they would be happy to see that particular part shaved. Go figure.

The World (except for Dong Guan) Sex Guide
There was NO access to our beloved site from Dong Guan. This, as well as many other "porn" sites were blocked from access within city limits (and possibly beyond). I had to use a gotomyPC type program and remotely access my home computer to access the site. Maybe you have a better solution?

My soapbox rant: The Fate of the Working Girl?
It's probably a good thing I don't speak Chinese. If I did, I probably would have gotten dumb and tried to marry one of these girls.

I got to wonder, what happens to them? Most of them come here to work in the factories, but end up needing more money, so they have to start prostituting. Their families back home don't know anything about it... or maybe they suspect, I don't know. Most of the girls I talked to didn't seem to come from broken homes, and they often had pictures of their homes, parents, grandparents (and no, they did not ask me for money afterwards). Alot seemed like good girls, who were just forced into this life out of necessity.

If they can do this, and go back home, and get married without anyone being the wiser, I would feel better. I would like to hope that these girls have a happy ending somehow. For instance in Japan, a woman could go work in a soapland, save money, then go back home and open a business without any social repurcussions (so I hear). What about these girls? Or with China's obsession with virginity, would these girls be unmarriable, and forced to live some other sort of life?

It really troubles me. Now I am not one of those high-and-mighty puritan types who think because they are in a sad situation, prostitution should be illegal. Stopping prostitution does nothing to help these girls, only to deprive them of the last possible good source of income they can earn. If they REALLY cared about these girls, they would make it legal, and perhaps, safer for the girls who end up in the underground establishments.

All of it leaves me with strange contradictory feelings inside me. Beng in China opened my eyes to many things, and has changed my views on women, beauty, poverty, and a myriad of other subjects. It's been a very interesting thought provoking experience for me. I suspect, even though I have come home now, I will be turning Dong Guan over in my head for a long time to come.

Prior to this recent trip to Dong Guan, I had experienced karaoke girls before in Fuzhou in 2000. Back then I decided that Chinese girls lacked the excitement and sexual prowress of their other Asian sisters (Japanese, Korean, Filipina). I kept this misconception until I was introduced to the wonderful Chinese experience known as the "sauna"

Saunas

OK. Prior before coming to a Hotel Sauna, I had visited a legitimate sauna pictured in the previous posts. It consisted of a steam room, various jacuzzis, a relaxation room where women would give you pedicures and give foot massages (didn't try it), and a massage room where you can get a 2 hour massage from a young lady, all for under $20 per person (I think). The same facilities also had a bar, a billiards room, an internet room, a workout room, an arcade, a barber, though all of this was at a slightly extra charge. Anyway, that's what I was expecting at the Hotel "Sauna." Wrong. BTW, for the legitimate massages, keep your pants on

The hotel "sauna", located on a dedicated floor identifiable from within the elevator, consists of a hotel room with a slightly more elaborate shower, and a tiny steam room, with some variation. Pretty much though, it looks like a normal hotel room.

The rate was about 280RMB (~$34US) for the room for 2 hours. If you don't like the room, you can switch it, just like the karaoke rooms. The only real difference any of them had, outside of bed placement, etc., was that the one I got had that weird gynecological exam chair with love-making handles on it (didn't get to use it though).

After you decide a room, in comes the girls, just like Karaoke. For saunas though, there was no team leader for each group, and there was dramatically less girls. I would guess each sauna has about 50-100 girls, who come in in groups of 5 or 6. These girls have number plates on them, and after their intial group bow, they will introduce themselves and give their individual number. What we did, was write down all the numbers we were interested in, and see as many girls as possible (one manager lady started getting slightly annoyed after about 30 minutes of this). Ideally, you can have just the ones you wrote down to come back for the semi-finals, and you choose your favorite with all of your top picks side by side. In our case after we did this, my buddy gave the manager lady 1 or 200RMB, I don't know if that was a tip, or a mandatory thing.

I only saw the saunas of Hui Hua and Miraton, but from my experience, it seemd like Miraton had prettier girls, but Hui Hua had twice the selection, and crazier service (from my girl at least). Also, Hui Hua was unique in that they had a selection of Mongolian girls who were in black dresses instead of pink, and did not do the standard greeting (they just stayed stone silent since they don't know Mandarin). In my experiences, some mongolian girls do speak English, Russian and Mongolian, but not Mandarin. Not sure if this is the case with these 4.

Unlike the karaoke girls, it is actually sort of worth it to get 2 sauna girls at a time. Ideally, you will want 2 who are friends, so they will work well together. You can have the girl of your choice call a friend if you like. That's why I have one girl who looked like Hsu Chi, and her dramatically less attractive friend in the pictures. It COULD be a problem if you don't speak Chinese though, since they could sort of "gang" up on you, and get a little more bold and take advaneforum.xxxe of you (by not offering the best service) than if there was just one. YMMV.

I am starting to get fuzzy on the details, but if you get two girls, there is a bit higher charge for the room. I think it might be an extra 100RMB (US$12) or something.

Anyways, first off, they will have you undress, and take you to the shower. They will bathe you, making sure certain parts are especially clean. If your man-hole starts feeling a bit tingly, that's because they are cleaning it with toothpaste or some sort of anti-bacterial type of thing.

After the shower, it's massage time. Suprisingly, they do a towel on you type of massage at first. No idea why. Then flip over, small massage, then the fun starts. Full body massage with their nipples in circular motion all over your back (ahh). After that, they start licking every square inch of your back side, and doing weird hicky moxibustion type mouth suction on your back.

The next one kind of confused me a bit. I heard weird gurgling noises and felt my back getting wet. Later, I realized, they were taking hot water (or tea) into their mouths and gurgling it on my back. Weird sensation really. The girls would periodically burst out in laughter at hearing each other making those noises. I suppose I could have gotten mad, but hell, it sounded funny to me too, so we all shared a good laugh.

Next was rim job time, and a nice BBBJ. I could be getting the order wrong, I don't remember. Anyway, previous to my trip here, my buddies kept telling me the girls would whip out a "banana" and try to stick it in places. The "banana" it turns out, is a dildo or a vibrator that they will try to shove in to your you-know-where. They will usually ask you, so if that floats your boat, hey, go right to it.

After all that preliminary stuff, then it is pretty much standard sex time. These girls were noticably looser than the karaoke girls. Reason being, a Karaoke girl might have 1 client a week, these girls might get 3-4 a DAY.

Payment to the girls is a measley 300RMB (~$36US) each. I asked my buddies why would girls want to work here instead of Karaoke, they responded "more stable income." I guess.

When I tried Hui hua the next day (the experience just described was in Miraton) I only got one girl, and went not by looks, but by how wild the girl looked. Ended up with a Shanghainese girl (only one I met in CP) named Amy.

She was CRAZY. In addition to all the stuff I mentioned earlier, rim job in the shower. BBBJ in the shower. Hot tea/ Ice water BJ. Sucking my toes. Sticking by big toes into her coochie. It was crazy. And for all that, once again, 300RMB. You got to love China man.

So all in all, this wonderful experience can be had for a grand total of about 600RMB ($72 US).

BTW, I was really curious about the Bandao Sauna. If anybody tries it, please let me know how it is.

Barbershops

I have read many posts on this forum about BBS's: Brothels in Barber Shops. I was told, you could tell them apart from normal barber shops by a red lantern or something outside. I saw no such thing. Some had neon purple barber poles, but by looking inside, it was obvious that they were legitimate haircutters.

I didn't start noticing until the second night which ones were legitimate, and which ones were just straight out brothels. Basically, I figured out by looking in, that some didn't have any barber chairs, but instead had 10 chicks sitting down in evening gowns staring out the window. I think it's safe to say those are brothels. The other places may have a lot of girls, but they were usually in polo shirts, and looking busy doing barber shop/hair salon type of stuff.

I only saw 2 of these types in CP, and I believe they were open fairly late. I think I heard the price was like 350-400 RMB (US$42-48). I believe you could take them back to your hotel for that price too. No first hand experience with going inside, but if I recall, one was on the right side on the drive from Mei Yi Dang to Ban Dao. Needless to say, for barber shops in CP, it's obvious which are legitimate and which are not.

Street Girls and Underground Brothels

My whole time in CP, I only experienced street girls once. We were parking in a plaza, waiting for a friend, when a pair of girls I had made eye contact with walked by and circled the car. They looked barely 18, definitely poor, sort of dirty, and not too educated. As they looked kind of unpredictable (kind of had that "Children of the Corn" look in their eyes), we passed.

I have also heard uncomfirmed reports that if you walk around on a particular street (which was by a really good HK guy owned recently remodeled seafood restaurant) old women will ask you if you want girls. They will then take you to another location where they have a selection of girls there.

As to why they would operate in that manner, I have no idea, nor do I know the quality of girls that they might have. I have heard services like this can run even under 100RMB ($12US). If anybody would like to corroborate or refute these reports, please let me know, but considering the alternatves, it seems dangerous and not really worth it.

The way all the other entertainment is set up in CP, with so much fun without even leaving your hotel, taking such risks just seems like a bad idea.

[Common Sense]

Now the good part.

I have learned that in general, the prettiest girls in all of China are in Macau, the nicest most luxurious areas are in Shanghai, and the best English speaking facilities are in Hong Kong. Changping's claim to fame is one thing: SELECTION!

Too many girls in this city. It's ridiculous. I had heard of places in Dong Guan before with hundreds of girls, and couldn't really believe it until I saw it for myself.

Here's how it works in the "night clubs". Once you are all settled in to your room, a manager (or somebody, I forget who) will radio for a Guest Relation Supervisor/ Manager/ Customer Leader or whatever it is they call it in that particular hotel. For sake of ease, I will refer to all of them as "team managers." They tend to be female, at least in their mid to late 20's, dressed in business suits, and probably ex-karaoke girls themselves. Their job is to "sell" you the girls.

"knock knock" In walks the team manager, and following her are 10-15 well dressed makeup done girls who will line up, bow, and greet you. The first time that happened I was thinking "DAMN, I'm glad to be in China." From there, it's up to you to decide if you want any of them or not. If you don't make a choice, or say you don't want any, the team manager will start making her spiel. She will usually grab 2 or 3 girls, one at a time, and give various reasons for why you should take her "this one's a model!", "this one's wild in bed!" and I even heard once "this girl is a virgin!" (nobody believed her though). If you really don't see anything to your liking, then she and her girls will leave, bowing and thanking you once again before they exit.

Don't worry too much about missing out if you make a pass at the first round, since there are probably at least 10-20 more team managers with their own team of girls who will come into your room every couple of minutes or so. It's a beautiful thing.

Once in awhile, a girl might see your group and get scared and refuse to come into the room. Or, when the team manager tries to do her spiel with a girl, the girl will run away and hide behind the other girls. That happened to us once or twice, which is strange, since we are probably the youngest guys in there (no one over 32) and 2 of my friends are downright millionaires. None of us have mohawks or mad max looking clothing on, so I don't think we look scary or anything. If anything, we probably look like we have TOO much fun. There is a lot of Ketamine (aka K or Kei-phun in China) heads in Dong Guan... by one estimate about 50% of all the girls do it. Anyway, by the end of the night though, the objetion of one or two weirdo girls makes absolutely no difference.

OK. So eventually, you are going to start seeing something you like. The way my buddies did it, was to get at least two girls each, the idea being if one turns out to be a b!tch, they still have a backup. When you choose a girl, she will sit by you and probably pour you and herself a drink. She will initiate some sort of light body contact (traditional hostess bar stuff). I hear, within 15 minutes, you can decide you don't want her, and send her back to her team manager without having to pay anything. If you do keep her past 15 minutes, then you are obliged to pay her 200RMB (~$24 US)

Since my Chinese sucks (incidentally, most Karaoke girls DON'T) I would usually get at least 2 girls. One who spoke a little English to act as a translator, and at least one girl I genuinely wanted. Sometimes this worked out, sometimes it didn't. Sometimes they all got along and everybody had fun, and sometimes they just fought for my attention (DAMN, I love China).
Basically, you can think of the girls as all competitors for the same business: yours. Though some have friends, they usually see each other as rivals (you know women). Also alot of times, me and the other guys would end up trading girls throughout the night, depending on who got along with whom.

One more thing about English. Alot of girls will fake it fairly decently. That is, they know how to introduce themselves, but that's about it. If you REALLY want to know if they speak English, try asking them questions with a bit of slang or an accent. I would ask "How'd ya' learn English"? If they could answer me from there, then they were usually the real deal.

Anyway, once they are sitting with you, they will do little things like keep your drink refilled, peel and feed you nuts/fruits, wipe your mouth, etc. Eventually, they will try to get you to start playing drinking games to get you drunk. Since I suck at the 5-10-15-20 hand game, I usually stuck to the dice guessing game. This got very interesting, especially the times I had 3-4 girls, because it was a linguistical marvel to hear one game being played in 4 different dialects/languages (Canotnese, Mandarin, Shaanxi accent Mandarin, Hubei accent Mandarin, etc). I was amazed that they all seemed to understand each other without any problem.

Throughout the night, I will get all the girls phone numbers (they ALL have cell phones) just in case. Ideally, you are supposed to stat getting more and more aggressive (grabbing, groping, etc) to see who is really willing to go back to the hotel with you, or at least, who you would have fun with. If anybody starts completely rebuking you, or you KNOW you don't want to take her home, you can just pay her her 200RMB and kick her out anytime. It's actually better for them if you kick them out earlier, since they can possibly get picked for another room or go home with another client who might call them.

I did not see anybody get TOO crazy with their girls in the rooms. Nobody was kissing, or had their hands in panties, etc. Once again, pretty normal hostess bar stuff. I guess theoretically, you can try to get it on in the bathroom, but you're girl better be pretty wild for you to pull that off. I am not sure if the DJ would stop you or not.

Also, a lot of the girls looked at me weird because I actually was interested in the Karaoke system. That is, in a Karaoke room, I preferred that somebody be singing Karaoke at all times, either myself, or the girls. Call me crazy I guess. Anyway, some were willing to sing, and some weren't. None were willing to sing more than 2-3 songs an hour.

There are several signs you can watch for on the girls. Like I said, they all have cell phones. Most likely, they are going to be the cheap China Anyphone brand type of phone. If you see a girl with a top of the line Nokia or Ericcson though (which run around $500US), then that is a pretty good sign that she has a sugar daddy who takes care of her, or she is a second wife (unofficial) to a rich guy and is probably still working on the sly. Another dead giveaway for this would be a set of car keys. We only saw one girl with a set of car keys, and you can tell, her car was newer and nicer than our own drivers was. For SURE that girl is some rich guy's pet. Not that it really matters anyway, but I always figure the more information, the better.

Another sign that the girls will give you that she likes you, is changing into her street clothes (I'm sure cocktail dresses and that sort of clothing is pretty uncomfortable). If she leaves to go change into her street clothes, that is her way of saying, "OK, I won't be going anywhere else but with this group tonight." If she doesn't change within the first two or three hours, that's usually a good sign that she isn't interested in going home with you. We had one girl who went and changed within the first 5 minutes. She was fine too; tall, slim, elegant looking... sadly no one took her home though. But, by following our routine, we had her number, so getting her at another time would be no problem.

So by this point in the game, you've decided who you want to take home. They say the girls choose their customers. You should be able to tell by this point if they like you or not by watching for the signs I mentioned. If they DON'T want you, they will start giving you excuses like they are on their period, they have a headache, they are too drunk, etc. Out of all of us though, I am the only one who got shot down (once completely, and once because my buddy stole her...bastard). It was definitely a communication thing, as some of the girls will avoid you like the plague if they can't speak your language. Maybe they are scared you will not understand words like "stop", "slower","get your hand out of there" etc. (Heheheheh.)

Anyway, once all is decided, go ahead and leave with your girl. IF YOU ARE TAKING HER HOME, YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY HER THE 200RMB FOR SITTING WITH YOU! It is included in the "expanded services" price. So don't pay, just get up and head for the door.

Apparently, alot of the girls have "friends" or "godbrothers" who are private mini-van taxi drivers. If you really want, then you can have them call a taxi they know, though if that makes you nervous, there should be no shoreforum.xxxe of taxi drivers waiting right outside the hotel. A simple "Ban Dao!" "Hui Hua!" "Mei Yi Dang!" or whatever the name of your hotel is will get you where you need to go. If you try and say "Peninsula!" or "Miraton!" though, you will probably be met with a blank stare... always keep your hotel card on you, or know your hotel name in CHINESE!

Once you are in your room, you and her could shower, together if that floats your's or her's boat. I am not sure if all the girls carry condoms, (I believe called "DOE") so it might be a good idea to buy your own beforehand. Also, the China condoms seem to be a little tight, and seem to be only available in 2 brands: Okamoto and Durex. I didn't have a good experience with Chinese Viagra, so if that's your thing, I suggest you bring your own from your country of origin.

Now here's the thing. A lot of these girls are fairly new to the game. They may get 1 take home client a week, and if they have only been there about a month or two, you can't expect their style to be all crazy. As a matter of fact, many are dead fish. Out of 6-7 Karaoke girls, only 1 gave head, and only briefly, with a condom on. 2 or 3 were complete dead fish and didn't want to do any other positions besides missionary (though one wanted it to be very romantic with me holding her hands and gazing at her). Another thing, I did not find any who were interested in kissing or making out, which I find crappy if you are going to bother with an all night session.

They are pretty and all, and may be fairly fresh, but there is a trade off for performance. For that reason, you may be better off choosing the more wild hyper type from the lineup.

Another option you might want to pursue is getting 2 or 3 girls at a time. Unfortunately though, 3 of us guys tried, and none were able to get a true menage-a-trois experience with the girls. The girls would usually insist on one girl at a time, while the other waited and didn't even touch the other girl. Some wouldn't even come into your room until the first girl was finished, and would keep calling to check if we were done or not.

After service is rendered, you have two payment options. One shot will run 500RMB ($~60US). I do not believe there is a time limit, but if you are going full force for more than an hour, it's probably good manners to give the poor thing a little bit more money. All night service is 800RMB (~$100US), which is basically as much as you can handle and stay concious (both of you) for. This would be paid the following morning. The first girl I had was a little tight, and I was having issues with the Chinese Viagra, so we would rest and try to go at it every 2 hours from like 2am till noon. Sadly, I never even came, but it was fun nonetheless.

In the morning, she tried to sell me a mooncake ticket (I had no idea what it was at the time). For 88RMB (about $11US), you take the ticket to the hotel, and bam, you get a mooncake (it was around mooncake festival time). I believe each girl HAS to sell 5, or she has to end up paying for it. There may be similar type of products/offers during other parts of the year. If you do decide to buy one, and have no interest in mooncake, you can always just buy it and give her the ticket. That way she can send it back to her family or something.

I never gave them money for cab fare afterwards, and none asked me to. Interestingly enough, one girl gave ME cab fare when I had tipped her an exorbitant amount for serving as translator and going above and beyond the call of duty. She was doing good job as translator, taking care of my drunken buddy and his girl (with genuine concern), calling cabs for us, trying to get the other girl to go home with me (she didn't), etc. So, when I gave her 350RMB, she gave me 20RMB for cab fare when I later asked her for change for a 100.

A lot of these girls are just nice girls trying to make a living, and may be only a week or two out of the factory. Many may have just lost their virginity a month prior to working. It's kind of sad really. Of course, there is the more jaded, money hungry, worldly types too, but it is easy enough to spot them.

So in a nutshell, that is the karaoke girl experience. For looks, variety, and low milage, it's definitely the way to go. For better service though, there is other options in Chang Ping...

Every nice hotel (to my knowledge) has a "night club" (karaoke rooms) in the hotel, which tends to be somewhere between the 2nd and 4th floors. Most take up 2 floors... why I don't know.

As soon as you walk into the elevator, you will probably see it listed on a plaque, along with other services; restaurant 2nd floor, karaoke 3rd-4th floor, sauna 5th floor, billiards room 6th floor, recreation room (no idea... arcade maybe) 20th floor, etc. You could always just ask any hotel employee before you hop into the elevator what floor the "nightclub" is. Don't worry about it. Nobody will look at you weird. There are no secrets in ChangPing, everyody, including the women, know exactly what is going on.

As soon as the elevator doors open, you will probaly see a reception desk, and a big line of girls looking like they are about to head to the Chinese prom (matching pink or other bright color shiny dresses). I personally found it pretty hilarious at first... too ridiculous for my western sensibilities.

Anyway, from there you will be approached about where you want to sit. From here there are two options; #1 get a fully stocked room like in the pictures listed below with private bathrooms and everything, or #2 go sit in the communal "bar" area (reserved for more "wealth concious" customers).

Be aware that the party starts EARLY in ChangPing. Most people head to these places by 6pm. Reason? If they come any later, all the good girls will be taken already (keeping in mind there are like 2-300 of them)! Supposedly, on Thursday through Sunday, if you do not have an advance reservation, you will not even get a room. I have no idea about the other customers in these places, as once you walk in, you are ushered into your private room, and stay there pretty much the rest of the night. Everything you can need is brought to you, and with your own private restroom, the only time you leave, is when you LEAVE.

Back to the prom dresses. I will go with option #1 for now, since it seems like 95% of customers go that route. The prom dress girl will take you to a room, and if you want, you can have it changed (we changed one time since the first was too dark... too hard to see the "merchandise"). Either her, or another prom dress girl will serve as your "DJ" for the night. Basically, the DJ's job is to keep the karaoke songs going (with original singing on if no one is singing)and serve as a waitress for the room. You are NOT supposed to try to rub up or grab her, though if your game is good enough, she might let you. Some were better than others, and the better ones engaged in conversation with the guys who didn't have girls, or played drinking games with everybody else. For this service, you are supposed to pay her 200RMB ($24US) at the end of the night. A typical DJ will make like 4000RMB a month ($500US).

Also, you may have male or female managers who stop in, usually in suits, who will make your acquaintance. They are usually there to make sure everything is running fine, checking if you need more girls, to call for more drinks/food (food was halfway decent in some places) etc. They may drink or play drinking games with you for a bit as well. In addition, there will be a whole bunch of different women coming in trying to sell you drinks (no idea why). Maybe some sell hard liquor, some sell beer, some sell wine, I dunno. There was constant stream of them though. Also, you will get the flower/gift lady, the photography lady etc., though suprisingly, the girls usually DON'T want you to buy stuff from them (in my case at least).

Whatever you end up ordering, there ends up being a minimum charge for the room. So even if you don't drink, you better end up ordering a whole bunch of fruit, nuts, snacks, food, etc. It seemed like every room had fruit in it, so that might be one of those have-to-buy included with the room things. The drink of choice was Red Wine mixed with 7-up (damn HongKies and there weird a$$ drinks), and on a typical night, we would go through about 6 -9 bottles. For that, our bills would run us about $50-$75 US each (or so I hear).
I heard conflicting reports about whether obvious foreigners would get charged any more. The local guy said no, that will always be the price, well my HongKie/US buddy said if I were to go with my friends, I would be paying twice that price for alcohol. Not sure who is right, though the way things are set up I am more inclined to believe the former... way too much competition for them to risk getting a bad rep. Also, if you don't finish your bottle, you could leave it there on reserve.

I will get to the girls part in the next post.

For now, let's discuss option #2, the communal bar area. Me and my guide chose this route once when it was just the two of us, and we were waiting for his girl (a DJ) to get off work. The one we went to was in the Miraton (Mei Yi Dang) Hotel, and we got there about Midnight on a Wednesday.

Within this area, there was about 10 or 20 tables, along with a gigantic karaoke screen. The system appeared to be different from the rooms (btw in the rooms to get to English songs enter 1 then 4) in that there was a real KJ (Karaoke Jockey) to input the songs which the customers probably wrote down and handed in. At that time, it was us and a group of four Cantonese lowlifes singing off-key 80's pop songs and Chinese Opera (picture denim jacket wearing extra's from a bad 80's Hong Kong Gangster movie). Not a pleasant experience.

Anyway, here, you pay for drinks as you get them. Most beers (do NOT drink Chinese Budweiser unless you like the taste of Ox piss) ran about 30-40RMB. If I remember right, and there was a buy 2, get 1 free special. It could be, that if you do not speak Chinese, you don't get offered this special. I believe you could also order bottles etc, though most people there did not seem to bother. Incidentally, they did not present us a check. They expect you to hand them cash right after you order.

I HEAR that at like 8-10pm this is actually a nice place to be, as there will be a live show (there was a seforum.xxxe there) and or singers/dancers. I wouldn't have minded checking that out, but unfortunately time did not permit and I can only speculate as to how entertaining the event might be.

Theoretically, I think you can get girls here. I hear it is bad etiquette though, to have the girls line up in plain view of all the other tables for you to choose. I hear if you want a girl, it's better if you call one you already know, or walk around and find one on your own (we did that once, when my buddy grabbed a girl on the way to us changing rooms).

Since this is the lower class section of Karaoke, they treat the custmers accordingly. At about 2am, they cut all the lights, and we were left sitting in candlelight... not the sort of romantic setting I want to be in with my male chinese guide. In the Karaoke rooms by contrast, you can stay until 6am, (I hear) and no one will bat an eye. The latest I ever stayed was 3am. Needless to say, we left shortly after the power was cut.

This city is crazy. In the heart of the city, every block there is at least one nice hotel. Within every nice hotel, there is a sauna and a "night club." Within every sauna and night club, there is at least 50 - 300 girls. EVERY NICE HOTEL IS LIKE THIS!

Outside of the hotel entertainment, there are stand alone Karaoke places that likewise have between 50-200 girls. You can't walk 2 blocks without seeing a place that has plenty of girls for the choosing. My guides say that 60% or more of the girls you see in the city are hookers at one of the karaokes, saunas, or other spots.

Money
100RMB=about $12US. $100US = about 800RMB. The largest denomination bill they have is the 100RMBnote, which will probably make your wallet look way fatter and richer than you are. This can get downright inconvenient, and you may want to look into a money clip. Beware though of the little bills that are about half the size of the other bills and have pictures of weird natives on them, those aren't RMB, but "cents."

Though everything is preferred to be on a cash basis, the hotels will take credit cards for the karaoke bills and for the sauna rooms. I believe the girls tips/fees must be in cash though (this is their sole salary, as they not only don't get paid, they have to pay 500RMB monthly just to work there).

Serivces generally involve a house fee, about 300RMB for Sauna Rooms, and at least a variable minimum room rate for Karaoke Rooms, though we usually spent about $50-$75 US each between 4 guys. One night with just two guys though, we ran the bill up to 1300RMB (about ~$162US) without even drinking too crazily. After that, payment to the girl for services, even legitimate ones, is between you and the girl, and is usually a standard fee, which will not be upsold, even to foreigners (or so I hear).

Nobody tips here. The payment you make to the girls may seem like a tip, but like I said, it's their salary. Even at the legitimate massage place I went (perhaps the only legitimate massage place in the city), the 30RMB (about $4 US) you give them is their only salary for a damn good 2 hour massage. I have had hundreds of Korean Accupressure massages, but these girls got some POWER in their little hands. I swear, they must all be training in the off season for the Chinese Olympic team or something. If you go, and they do good, please pay more, as these girls are usually hard working, nice and trying to make a decent living while avoiding the hooker route.

Types of girls
This city in particular seems to cater to 18-23 year old girls. Of the 7-800 girls I saw, maybe only about 10 were above 25, and maybe only about 10 were so bad that I wouldn't even touch them. Generally, there weren't too many taller girls, but within every place I went, there was maybe 5-6. I don't care what your type is, you go to two karaokes, I gaurantee you will find it... unless you're into fat girls or non asian girls or something.

Another good thing is, they all do the normal Western style make up and dress now. In 2000 in Fuzhou, there were girls without makeup in slippers, and cheap cotton dresses. No such thing here; all nice clothes and professionally done make-up. Supposedly, there is one mall where all the girls get their makeup done, and if you hang out there at like 5pm, you can see ALL the beautiful girls in the city there and do some advance scouting.

Language
Language is a big problem since there is almost nobody who speaks English in CP. Suprisingly, even at the nicer hotels there was only one or two staff who could KIND of speak a little English. If I didn't speak the little Chinese I did, I would have been very assed out. I found NOBODY who was fluent in English in CP (I about cried once I got to Hong Kong and heard the women speaking her majesty's royal English). Though it is GuangZhou, only about 50% can speak Cantonese... maybe 65% can understand it. This is understandable since, like the factory workers, the working girls come from all over China. As a matter of fact, many working girls are EX factory girls.

Dining
Eating out would be impossible without knowing Chinese as well. The hotel has english menus, but the food sucks and is overpriced, and the waitress will only understand if you point at what you want. Well I did see a McDonalds or two, every other restaurant I went to had pure chinese menus, with no pictures. When I was leaving I saw a English publication called "Here!" which listed favorite ex-pat spots, though I think they cater more to the city of Dong Cheng. According to the magazine, they should have a website up next month, though you might want to try a web search for that.

Transportation
You would be nuts or suicidal to try and drive in this city, as pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcycles, cabs, cars, dogs, kids, old guys with carts, and just about everything else that moves roams the highway freely. The lines on the street are taken as a suggestion, as are the idea of "one way streets" (shiver). How I did not see an accident in the one week I was there can only be called a mircale of Chinese cultural development. Everything from cars, to dogs, to pedestrians seem to have built in radars that warn of impending dangers from behind, and allow them to move accordingly without being fazed.

While there are some "real" taxis around town, the transportation of choice seems to be private operated mini-van taxis. Supposdly, every one of those mini vans you see (about half the size of those old Toyota Mini Vans) is a taxi, and will take you whereever you need to get in Chang Ping for 15-20RMB ($2.40 US). There are also motorcycle taxis, I think you can spot them by a orange safety vest they wear. I wouldn't dare ride one of those, but many many of the girls do (and no, it's not like Vietnam where you can solicit them from the bikes... they just trying to get somewhere, not advertise).

Living
Outside of the entertainment area, are huge residential buildings, some of them downright nice (though small) available for the low price of 1800RMB (US $225) a month.

The place I stayed at, the Peninsula Hotel (which everybody knows as Ban Dao - Chinese for Peninsula) cost me about 280RMB a night (~$36US) though I might have been getting a special rate since my company books there often. From what I understand, this is the general rate for hotels of that caliber in CP (including Hui hua and Miraton). There were fancier hotels, but the rooms are not supposedly noticably nicer, nor are the girls any prettier.

There was no convenience store inside the hotel, but there was a fake 7-11 called 168 that stays open 24 hours that has drinks, condoms, fake Viagra (which I don't recommend taking), etc and even offers money changing services, located across the street. The couple can't speak English, but you can point, and they will type out prices on the calculator for you. I believe the husband is a Hong Kong ex-pat.

Miraton had a REAL 7-11 next door (which was pretty tiny by US standards), and was also walking distance from Hui Hua.

Safety

Generally, I felt safe in CP, and didn't have any beggars bugging me (the 4 beggars I saw were 2 OLD couples and for sure they are REALLY just trying to survive), nor karaoke girls trying to steal stuff from my hotel rooms. I think everybody is so scared of losing their jobs, that they don't dare mess around. The street girls might be another issue though.

Well I did have many people stare at me as I spoke English from across the room, I never got worried that someone would try to rob me or steal my passport. That is, it felt like the "criminal mind" was not as devious there as it is in other parts of the world, or even the US. To give you an idea, half the time, we didn't lock the car doors when we went places, since the parking attendants/security guards are always on duty. I was told, it's not like the US or other parts of the world where you can get killed for a certain amount of money. Worst case, you might get beaten up a bit. I guess the poor people here have learned to accept there are many people richer than them, and don't look for a shortcut to wealth by robbing people. Plus the police probably would treat them like hell since business tourism is the #1 source of income.

I could be wrong on that though. On first glance, I do look Chinese, and in places like this I tend to walk around purposely looking a bit meaner than I normally would. I don't know if it would be a different story for a older caucasian guy who walked around looking lost and confused.

Part 1- What IS Dong Guan?

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert or a learned scholar in Chinese culture, history, or geography. A lot of my conclusions are based upon observation, personal interviews, and personal speculations. I am sure there are more than a few things I will get wrong, but since there seems to be almost no information on the area, I figure my two cents couldn't hurt any.

OK, where to start. As a primarily America raised Asian guy, I have been to China once before in my life (Guangzhou and Fuzhou) over 6 years ago, and did not quite get a grasp of how things worked in the little time that I was there. Having just spent the past week in Dong Guan, I am comfortable enough with my knowledge level to give a report on the city and its services.

First off, a geography lesson. Dong Guan is located in the huge province of Guang Dong in Southern China. Dong Guan itself is pretty big too (I would guess at LEAST the size of LA County), and within it, there are several "towns." Among them; DaLang, Zhangmutou, HouJie, Dong Cheng, and the place I spent the most time in:Chang Ping.

Dong Guan is generally a manufacturing area, full of factories, staffed with hundreds of thousands of workers from all over China. They come by train from poor rural areas, attain employment at one of the thousands of factories, and spend their entire year living and working in the factories doing menial labor for probably less than $100 a month, with their only real vacation being a week in January for Chinese New Year.

The factories of course have owners, and of course clientele who want to see these factories. For that reason, around the area, entertainment centers started popping up for the sole purpose of the factory owners to entertain their visiting factory customers. As this continued to grow, so did the number of hotels, and likewise, the number of entertainment centers.

Somehow, after all this (I am speculating about a lot of this) it came to be known as a pure entertainment town, especially for the HongKies (slang for Hong Kong citizens) who lived just across the way in good old Hong Kong. As Hong Kong tourism grew, the area grew even more so, to the point where some claim it is the biggest entertainment area of it's kind... or so claim my Chinese buddies, though I learned in High School History class to never trust China Statistics.

Though I hear Hou Jie has the PRETTIEST girls in DongGuan, concentrated within the Cinese, the Sheraton and Jia hua (?) (though Sheraton supposedly the best), Chang Ping has a much much much MUCH larger selection.

Im new to this Forum, and to be honest - New to China traveling.

Was just wondering if anyone would be able to answer some rookie questions for me.

My friend and I have decided to Ditch our trip to Vietnam (we both have gone several times), and as a spur of the moment thing, have decided we are going to go to DongGuan.. BUT - the whole which area to book a hotel in is doing my head in.

Im maybe thinking of Booking a room at the Kande Club Hotel (as seen on this forum), but i hear alot of ppl talking about the Changping area of DongGuan - which from my research isnt the same area as where the Kande Club hotel is at.

Would it be better to book a hotel in Changping and maybe just Visit the Kande Club to use there Sauna, or should we just book a room at Kande Club and visit other areas after experiencing there Sauna?

So sorry for the Newb questions - sorta doing my head in at the moment (so confused)..
