Yuck!!! Self tanning lotion and massage

I have had several clients during the last few weeks coming in with self tanners on. Not only do the tanners smell, but I had one come off on me and leave my arms and hands orange. The others just seem to bead up and make the client look spotted. I am considering posting a notice that informs my clients not to self tan 10 - 24 hrs prior to a treatment and for new clients or ones that forget, have them shower before the massage. I guess I just don't want to be orange or ruin my sheets, anyone else?

i feel the same way - the smell is simply horrid. and the staining is bad too. i've never gone as far as posting a notice, but i have asked them afterwards that if they want to preserve the quality of their "tan" then they should wait. but no matter how long they wait, if that stuff is on there and you get them warmed up, it's still gonna stink. :shock:

I have had two sets of sheets ruined due to self-tanners. I understand your frustration.

I don't think a shower will actually help the self-tanning color to not stain. If they have just a little on their skin, it will still stain, the oils and lotions you will be using is the reason it's coming off. I wish I had a tactful way of letting my clients know not to schedule an appointment after they have applied the self-tanner.

I do use a linen service now. It was aggravating to have ruined sheets. Especially when the sheets are new!

Although I'm glad our clients are choosing to stay out of the tanning beds... What a battle!

I had a lady come in one time, and I began the massage and noticed my hands felt very oily/creamy wierd texture and it was just mixing with the cream I just applied, felt like I was painting or something, and I said, "um, did you just go tanning?" and she had indeed just the hour before went to get spray tanned, it was not even completly dry!! I said, "This massage is going to completly take off any tan you have just applied" I was trying to get her to want to stop the massage, but she said,"Oh I don't care, just continue with the massage" I was kind of new and trying to build a clientelle at the time and continued with the massage , wondering if my palms were going to be orange,..when massage was over, I ran to the bathroom and scrubbed the heck out of my hands..I will never do that again....argh..

Yep. I had a client about a week ago who had applied self-tanner. I massaged her and was extremely frustrated with the fact that I could tell her tanner was coming off on my NEW sheets. I am currently in the process of trying to get the self-tanner out and am pretty annoyed that I'm probably going to have to throw out a set of sheets when I only had four sets to begin with anyway! Argh.

Ugh, I know your frustration. The beading up in my hands and on their skin..so gross. They smell like their are gearing up to spontaneously combust.
Ick.

Yuck! Not only does it feel gross, but that smell seems to linger long after the client has left.
