working from home - licences!

Hello,

I am fairly newly qualified and would like to practice as a massage therapist from home but am a bit confused about licences. I have spoken to other therapists using a spare room at home who don't, nor never have, had a licence..and as far I can tell getting one to practice from home involves quite a process (health and safety involvement- with potential changes possibly needing to be made to the property etc).
Personally I don't expect i would have a huge influx of people and am concerned that if I start a ball in motion for getting a licence it might be refused anyway..even though I have a perfectly suitable room for the purpose.
The other thing is that I would like to be mobile as well..so this will probably involve many more licences and it could all get very expensive! I am very interested to hear from other people working from home (or mobile) and what the general consensus is on licences..please advise!

Welcome to the forum.

As far as I know the only place in the UK you need a licence to practice massage is London, you are allowed to use part of your home for business purposes without getting consent, if you go down the road of changing the use of your home to commercial premises you are inviting a lot of unnecessary expense and upheaval

...and you don't need a licence to be mobile, but you may need to change your motor insurance.

The only big thing you have to watch is your home insurance. Most companies don't like home practices or having clients to come and stay. There is another thread here that has dealth with this issue and recommends some firms. I am about to change mine to Ansvar through [link=http://www.balens.co.uk]Balens[/link] insurers. Its slightly cheaper then my current policy too! )

As far as I am aware if you live in London you need a 'special treatment license'. In the borough I live in there are exceptions to this eg. if you belong to certain organisations such as the GPP you are excempt from the license.
