why call it "swedish"?

Hello,

I was with some Swedish friends the other day and they were very suprised about this thing called "swedish massage" that is advertised all over the place in the UK. I told them it was a "normal massage" ("normal" compared to remedial or aromatherapy) and they asked me why on earth do we call it "Sewdish"?
Any ideas anyone?

Hi Artemis,

The system we know as Swedish was devised by Per Henrik Ling, who was Swedish.
He was involved in 'medical gymnastics' and developed the massage strokes as an adjunct
to these remedial gymnastics.

Thx for the link TigerBee, oddly enough a few days ago I was thinking of finding out a bit more about Per Henrik Ling myself.

Its quite interesting that while new techniques and treatment styles have been established since then. Most of them come back to his principles of massage.
