These diet changes are needed too I feel and that will be hard but be creative and try to get it done. Maybe a movie or book on the topic can help them see that the diet has a big impact on happiness.
I asked a girl recently who ate a whole food, vegan 80% diet what changes in health she noticed and she said merely I am just so happy all the time. When I began a vegan recently and started eating about 50% raw food, I noticed I feel happier as well and my head clearer. Many have said the same thing coupled with energy who went vegan and mainly raw.
Work towards that goal..summer is a great time for raw foods..start going to farmer's markets, health food stores and coops together maybe following ti with eating at a picnic table nearby or going swimming or something outside that is fun and relaxing and eat some of the healthy snacks you brought. connect good food with good memories.

If using any herb only use in the form of tinctures and be sure they are organic or wildcrafted as the rest have little potency (teas are 2nd best-use distilled water as it is empty and absorbs more of the phytochemicals that cure and prevent disease.
One site recommends lemon balm. It is a good stress reliever and best if it is fresh..it grows very prolifically. I planted 2 little plants and now 2 years later, I have 3 big patches about 18 inches square each. It smells delicious.

OMEGA 3 VERSUS OMEGA 6 FATTY ACID BALANCE

Also another healer of irritability, stress and all kinds of emotional and mental health problems is reestablishing the right balance of omega 3 to 6 fats which should be 1 to 1 and is about 20-50 times to much omega 6 in the us and some other countries.
If not a vegetarian, use fish oil --at least 3000 to 5000 mg.
with this also take in sources of omega 32 fatty acids and reduce omega 6 and bad fats in the diet.
Nearly all seafood contains omega 3 fats but these sources are several times higher than tuna..salmon, mackerel, sardine and herring. these best sources can be either canned or fresh -wild caught, never farm raised.
For plant source it is harder to find.
On of the best sources of omega three fats, as well as many other nutrients is this superfood---chia seeds often sold as salba. QA single tsp is about 3500 mg and it has little to no taste and can be mixed with liquid and many foods like put in salads etc.
Also flax seeds and flax seed oil (do not cook either--be sure the flax seeds are ground and put the flax seed oil in the freezer to store it.)
Also purslane and raw walnuts are high in omega 3 fats.
This imbalance of omega three to omega 6 fats causes chemical imbalances that can lead to things like depression, anxiety, irritability etc
Also greatly reduce or stop entirely trans fats, saturated fats, and hydrogenated fats. Reduce fast foods.

FAMILY MEETING/FAMILY TIME

Also have a family meeting and have a nice snack and a fun activity in addition to discussion. Pass out papers and have everyone list at least one thing they like and admire/appreciate about each family , a happy memory they shared with each person, and things like that.
Explain that this is affecting everyone and you want to keep to work on some things to lesson it.
During your family meetings or family days (which is a nice tradition to start..I used to have snacks, fun activities like picnics, art projects, or whatever you all like, with games, sharing time, a prayer and so forth to have at least one good day together..can also discuss one good or bad thing they like to see more or see less of and brainstorm or encourage more of the good things and how to lesson the bad things. Brainstorm compromises and solutions and get people to agree to try their best. Everyone counts equally here.
Be kind, be praising. Have the dad and teens figure out one common thing/activity/interest they both like and can do together every week or every other week or whatever and thus help themselves have at least one time where they have fun doing things together. Insist your teen do it if they want to or not.
The dad and child must agree that this time is to be off limits for fighting. Have them use a code word if one starts getting one towards going in a bad direction and that they previously agree if the code word is said they will change directions and go no further. They must both agree to really try during this time.
Having one with you or their siblings where you rebuild good feelings and memories and common interest might also be a good idea to enhance all the family relationships.
Also work out some strategies in advance that can be used when a fight starts like the person agrees to go outside for 10 minutes to cool down, certain words are off limits, self esteem will not be assassinated during fights, etc
Might even start a behavior modification chart with a sticker or star for time fights are averted, good feelings expressed, better methods of discussion used or whatever and when the dad or teen gets so many stars they get a reward that they really want whether it is an object, an activity, time together (or apart), a perk, not having to do a chore, money, or something they will work to get. these can be very effective..eventually when they are acting better the rewards can be cut back or replaced by praise or something more simple.

You might start going to church together as a family at least a time or two a month and even praying together for concerns and problems each family member has.
Praying for your loved ones yourself can also help I feel (let them know you prayed for them or this or that concern of their and ask for prayer from them).
It is harder when our children are teens but even then things can be done. Let go and let God ..Try these things asking His help and blessings and continue even if at first you do not see results. He can make good come of bad. Worrying never helped anyone but action did..you started this action by asking this question and now consider those things I said even if at first you think it is not doable..
