What exactly is calcification?

Can anyone tell me what is calification? Someone I know had pain in his shoulder. His massage therapist said it was calcification. How do you know whether it is calcification or something else?

I don't do massage and I'm not sure how you can tell if someone has calcification (apart from pain being a symptom of it).

As far as I'm aware it's when, in effect, bone grows where it shouldn't i.e. additional bone around the joints causing nerves to be trapped or even similar growing on or around muscles.

I'm sure someone will be able to give you the official description of it (or you may find it with a search on the net. )

I'd guess they're talking about calcific tendonitis; good link here.

If it is that, then you don't want to go massaging the area, as you may aggravate the problem.

Diagnosis is by X-ray.
