Voluntary Work

Hi everyone - I have at last plucked up courage to go do some voluntary work at one of my local hospices. I had an interview and am going to have a mentor who is very nice. I have had my criminal check and everything is ok. I am going for an induction day next week and then can start at the end of September. Sound good but the only thing is I am so nervous about going. I haven't done any massage for nearly 12 months and feel that I will not have enough experience. Any advice would be helpful.

First of all well done! I thought about doing it myself for a while and then left it...too lazy or too scared....
Isn't there any friend or family members you could practice on just to brush up your skills? Or what about a one day course just to remind you of stuff you learnt and might have forgotten? Dont worry you will probably be fine after the first one!!

I think you are doing a great thing. Who did you approach at the hospice? - I would like to do the same .
Don't worry if you haven't done any recent massage - I'm sure you will be greatly appreciated.

[sm=wave.gif]Well done for doing what you are doing. I have been a volunteer CT at my local hospice for almost 18 months and it is great. I, like you, was very very nervous and thought I would forget how to do my therapies just out of sheer panic! Iwas looked after so well. Once you get over your first time, I'm sure you will be fine and everything will come back to you. It's a bit like starting a new job I suppose. Once you get to know people and see how happy the patients are to be touched for something other than injections or painful procedures, you get a deep sense of satisfaction and happiness. You will also learn how to adapt your therapy for the patients benefit which - certainly in my case - makes you more versatile and enhances your treatments with private clients.
