But looking at your posts, I would say 70 percent are just of zero-content. Questions don´t count as content.

In the case of this thread you had also not added very much of value.

- You don´t want to tell me, that it is of eminent importance whether you change your money here or there, do you? This may become a factor, if you begin to think about tenthousands of Euros/Dollars, but not the small change-stuff you exchange with a few hundred bucks here or there. Therefore my answer was perfectly OK and to the point.

- About the electronics I said exactly what you later confirmed. Was that then general? Yes, but it was also correct and to the point.
Your confirmation was hot air and the information whether the guy can get the stuff in HK or elsewhere is useless to him. He asked for opportunities in Beijing. And he didn´t ask for imitations or copies but for "brand name goods". Period.

- About visit to great wall: You seem to have some more detailed knowledge and you shared that. Thanks.
But my advice was good enough for someone coming to Beijing for the first time. A good hotel (I´m not talking about some dump!) will always have a concierge, who can arrange something for the traveller. And believe me, the cost for a full day limousine and a driver who speaks some English and knows his way around in/around Beijing is not going to kill anybody unless you are so cash-strapped, that +/- 20 Euros is the make or break for you. But then I wonder, how you got to Beijing in the first place...! So, again information from me was good enough and you had added something useful for whoever wants to use public transport and can book well in advance - This guy is almost there, while we still discuss this thing.

- Asking someone to read and search the forum is absolutely OK.
Why should any of us chew what has been written more than once over and over again? I cannot see any advice from you for the evening of our friend. So my advice seems to have been correct in this respect too.

hey Concerned, I don't have any problems with you per se, or with anybody for that matter. I am just stating a fact, I do not see any reason to add to a thread if you are not contributing, helping, complementing, or thanking a person.

C'mon we both know saying things like look it up on the internet, or ask the hotel, or don't mess with non-officials does not help anyone or add to any thread, and you, as well I and likely many members, know that you have made many-many posts like that and yes I have looked at many of your contributions.

sorry forgot to answer your other questions:

"electronics" yes everybody here is right, to a certain degree, if you want to buy good electronics, things to use everyday, cameras, computers, apple stuff, etc. buy this at home! it is better and actually cheaper, China is not what it use to be. Now that being said if you want cheap or imitation stuff that comes to the US direct from China without being repackaged (by Sony, Cannon etc.) i.e. flashlights, cellphone jammers, usb cables, adapters then go to Hong Kong, sorry not in BJ, but if you still want to try go to Hong Qiao market. now if you want fake DVD, CDs or silk and if you have time a tailored suit go to the silk market that's the only thing I would buy in BJ besides food (and of course your lady friends or things for your lady friends, how ever you roll).

your questions:

"exchange currency" if you can do it at home before you leave with your bank or any bank offering the best rates then do it. most BJ hotels are quite a distance from the airport. you will probably need about 150 rmb with a real taxi, don't get scammed by unmarked cars or vans wanting 500 rmb. if you forget then you can change at the airport but there is a service charge of about 30-60 rmb. you can miss the currency exchange places they are on either side of the baggage claim terminals and there is usually a line of foreigners (which in this case is us) and they are also on the outside of the baggage claim terminals when you first come out of customs.

"see the wall" if you want to see the wall on your own you will have to use a bus there are 4 great wall sites close to BJ central they range from 60-110 km (about 35-80 miles) away. There are 2 buses the 919 and the 916 they will take you to the 2 most popular sites of the great wall, but you are going to be on the bus for a long time. Personally, even though i'm over the touristy thing of BJ, i would still get a tour guide & driver for that day, you can usually get a combo. of great wall and forbidden city or ming tombs or something like that or whatever you want. book this at home it is always cheaper, if you have a Chinese friend have him book it with a Chinese company he/she knows there at your homeland even cheaper. But if you know somebody in China and they book for you then even cheaper. The most expensive? booking at your hotel, it only makes sense right? The Hotel wants to make some money on top of the tour guides so they will charge you even more, in other words completely disregard and ignore what Concerned said about the hotel arranging everything for you unless you just happen to be rich then do whatever you want.

2. Cabs arent willing to go to great wall (without steep negotiation), its about 1.5 hours outside city. Your best off just going with a company if you cant speak chinese
3. Real electronics are more expesnive out here than in the states.

I've taken to having the hotel change my money at the front desk. The rate is a little steeper, but it saves the hassle of waiting in line at the bank.
Also - You can use your USA ATM card at most major bank ATMs - especially the Bank of China ones. Just remember it's going to cost an extra $5 when you see your bank statement so don't do it a little at a time.

When you go anywhere, it doesn´t really matter very much, where you change your cash-money - at the destination or already at the departure-point.

In a country, that you don´t know, I would strongly advise against any kind of money-business with "inofficial" places/persons. They will most likely fuck you and you may even get into conflict with local law.
The possible advaneforum.xxxe that you might gain, is not worth that risk!

Regarding the cab for the great wall: Just tell the hotel-people, what you plan to do and they can arrange everything for you - the best way to go!

Shopping in Asia/China isn´t anymore cheaper there than anywhere else. Forget it. You might just run into guarantee-problems later on and into compatibility-problems, as many goods are speficially adopted for Chinese market (e.g. language...).

Regarding the activities in the evening: Please take the trouble and use the forum search-function and search for the topics that interest you and then READ them, before you ask. A lot of answers are given in this forum already.

Finally, what kind of bullshit is this about mailing to your private e-mail-address. Whoever gives you advice, will do it over this forum, so, that others can SHARE this information as well.

Also, I hope, that spammers use this opportunity and blast your e-mail, as it is the most stupid thing to give a way an e-mail address in a public forum.

I am visiting and could use some tips. Should I exchange currency at the aiprot or try to find the local backs with no ability to communicte in chinease.
