vinyl wedges for couches

Although I'm very happy with my portable couch at the moment, it doesnt have a back rest. I am trying to find a way to "prop" up my clients after a treatment. I should have thought of this before I bought it but Cosco had the Master couch in at a very reasonable price and as it was the extra wide one, I couldn't resist it. I have seen on the Beautelle site that they do wedges for £35 and wondered if anyone has tried one or if there are any other ideas please as I wont be able to afford to buy another couch for some years yet.

proping up a client at the end of a session may sound alright but you may find it better to assist them into a fully upright position for a few minutes and offer them a drink of cool water.Make sure their transition from couch to feet on the floor is steady (as they return from the heavens to mother earth).

I would agree with Stephen. I have the Beautelle couch that has the backrest that can be raised to various heights - and I never use after a massage. (It is great for other things and I do recommend the Beautelle Osbourne range!)

I always let the client gather themselves laying down, then help them to sit upright for a few minutes, with the glass of water.

There is always the problem if you let them lie propped up that they may be there for some time..........fine if you can afford the wait, but if you have other clients booked it could be embarrassing to get them to shift themselves!!!

Not sure that a wedge is going to give reliable support - you can always use a chair with cushion.

Hey Susie,

Massage Tables with back rests can be helpful for some treatments. But for massages i'm not sure they offer much benefit. Once a massage is completed I leave the client alone to get up in their own time, advise them to slowly move to a sitting position and sit on the edge of the table for a few moments before standing up. They can either dress or put on a dresing gown provided. They also have a small pager (well, a wireless doorbell) that they can use to let me know that they are ready for me to return to the room.

I have a variable backrest on my couch as I like clients to be slightly raised during reflexology, so that I can see their face. It is also useful if you have to massage a pregnant woman as lying flat is not a good idea. I have one male client who gets vertigo when he lays flat, so I raise the backrest slightly when he is on his back and it really isn't a problem massaging someone in this position.

There is a good way of helping a client off the couch if they have difficulties. Quite difficult to explain, but if the therapist faces the couch from one side, puts their arms nearest the client's head across the client's chest and the client pulls up on the arm. At the same time as doing this, the therapist uses the other hand to gently pull and swing the client's legs around, so that the client ends up sitting upright on one side of the couch, facing the therapist.
