URGENT: Massage when pregnant - thougths please

Hi there

I have a client booked today for back massage and I've since found out she's 5 weeks pregnant ... can I still do a gentle massage?

Hi Sally

As long as there are no underlying problems then massage is fine right though the pregnancy, you have to adapt to the person and how large the bump is as to how you position them on the couch or sitting etc.

check with your insurance company and your policy, most will now not insure less than 12weeks pregnant

remember that 5 weeks pregnant is only one week after 1st missed period - there will not be a bump to feel at this stage.

The insurance company policy that Tigs quotes is based on caution - as miscarriage is common, if someone has a massage and miscarries soon after, then blame could be attributed to the massage, and insurance companies do not want to fight difficult battles or pay out money!

I know of no medical contraindication to gentle massage in pregnancy; however if a client has a history of recurrent miscarriage it may be wise to avoid massaging in the first trimester for the above reasons.

I have trained in pregnancy massage so can insurance wise do more than the standard "stroking" however the insurance companies are really tightening up and i would suggest to anyone if its not covered on your policy even if you think its ok to do it, let the client know and they can decide and sign an appropriate disclaimer...

if they sighn a discalaimer you should be o.k.
there are trigger points which can cause miscarriage . i am pregnant and my wholistic doc. said to tell a therapist to avoid massage below the knees just to be on the safe side.
