turning a breech baby

Hi, Can anyone give me advice on how to help turn a breech baby please? The person I'm going to work with is 34 weeks pregnant and wants help with this. She has not had reflex before.

I would leave this to her midwife. Reflex will be really beneficial for relaxation at this stage.

I did an advanced reflexology workshop yesterday on pre-conceptual and pregnancy care and was told that it was not possible for reflexology to turn a breach baby.

There are those that agree that reflexology can turn a baby and those that say you cannot. But where they both agree is that no one should give reflexology in this situation unless they are an advanced practitioner with training in pre-conceptual and pregnancy care. Without being nasty I would think that as you are asking what to do, then you have not been trained to that level. If that is the case then I would suggest that you leave it alone.

Of course if you wish to go ahead then please make sure that your client has asked herconsultant if it is ok. (Insurance Claim)

There is an acupressure point for helping with this but having just been on a maternity reflexology course and told that, in theory, the unborn baby could sue you up to it's 21st birthday (and that's why maternity reflexologists should keep records for 21 years) I'd leave well alone or just give good relaxation.

[/align][/align]keep records for 21 years??? are you sure that a law has been passed to say this? which course did you do?[/align][/align]i agree with healistic on this one... if you want to specialise in certain areas, do the advanced courses to gain the knowledge.[/align][/align]the points you want are not reflexology points anyway... they are acu points that we dont even touch (pretty much) in a normal reflexology treatment.[/align]

I agree with Rosie. Anyway, the acupressure points should not be touched until 38 weeks of pregnancy and there is no guarantee that it will work anyway. If done before, the baby can turn back. Yes i would check with midwife first if it is ok to do this.

Dear Touchtoes

The best way to turn a breech baby is Moxibustion and this is exactly the best period to do it. Moxa efficacy tends to decrease as time goes by, being week 34-35 the best time to succeed.

Yes I have had an email from a tutor who teaches reflexology in labour and she says you can get sued for up to 25 years after a baby has been born! She is a midwife too.
We have to be so careful.

There is a lot of scared therapists out there. I would like to know if anyone has anyone ever heard of a reflexologist being sued 'ever' and if so what for ??? It would be laughed out of court i'm sure. What would they try and prove? it is a totally non evasive treatment!

Cedar and TJG - have either of you got any links to sites with regulations that stipulate a 21 or 25 year rule? I only know of two cases of litigation for malpractice in massage, but have yet to come across anything for reflexology. How could anyone possibly prove retrospectively that a session of reflexology influenced the position of a foetus?

Thank you Jabba my point exactly. Actually -I mis printed I should have said non-invasive, and yes reflexology treatments are non-invasive. It is only what someone can prove that would make any point. I have helped many people with lots of different problems, I, in my heart know that it was me that helped and the client knows that it was me that helped but I couldn't prove anything in a court to say so. I think that talk of being sued scares therapists from doing what their knowledge tells them is right. I have read threads on this forum of therapists unsure about treating pregnant clients at all just in case !!!!!! just in case of what-that you do a good job and help someone that has come to you for relief or relaxation. The only reason I have insurance is in case someone falls off my couch or is allergic to the cream I use etc, not that in 25 years time a grown man/woman will say that their life has not been 100% because their Mother had a non-invasive treatment from me before they were born. I don't think so. These may sound strong words but I feel srongly about this one.

if science cant prove that reflexology works or doesnt, how is it going to be proven that what happened during a treatment (apart from falling off a couch etc) yes, up to 25 years later, did anything? honestly, what toot!

I am a Midwfie and Reflexologist. and I would strongly advised people not to try to turn breech babies.
It can be dangerous in that if the baby has a long cord and on turning it gets wrapped around the baby's neck it can asphixiate it. resullting in a stillborn baby.
where I work as a Midwife when turning breech babies there is a theatre on standby just in case of this happens and a emergency ceasarean section would take place.

If that's the case then we would have to have a theatre on standby all the time if a woman is breech, as the baby may turn naturally. There is nothing wrong in trying to turn a breech bay, we get taught to do it in Maternity courses after all.

I have not met any complementary therapists who can actually claim to have 'turned' a breech baby - but know a few midwives and obstetricians who have tried and occasionally succeeded always within a maternity unit. What Maternity courses teach turning breech babies?

Well yes I have turned a breech baby. I gave a treatment and the next day the baby had turned. I have done this a few times and had no problems. As I said this is a help only, the babies were obviously going to turn anyway. So it's a natural progression of their pregnancy. It hasn't always worked, so its like inducing birth. It will only happen it baby is ready.
