Treating young adults

Hi,

I saw a client today who had been booked in with me - she is 15 and came with her mother. Can anyone tell me what the correct protocol is when giving treatments to minors. What I did today was asked the mother to give permission by signing consent on the consultation sheet, as well as the daughter.

Hi Binah

When treating minors I will always get the client to sign the consent ( After all, it is they who are the client!) and then get the parent to countersign. The parent should also be present during the treatment as much for your protection as the childs.

I was told when studying that if you have a client who is under 16 or who has learning difficulties that there must always be a parent/guardian/carer in attendance for insurance purposes.
Many years on, I now treat several clients who have learning difficulties, downs syndrome, epilectic etc. and the carer always stays during the treatment. I could go on about court cases, minors suing etc. so that is why you should always keep yourself in the right.

Yes Mum was in the room whilst the treating took place and I got both signatures on the consultation form.

I am going to get a sign up in the room as I am finding that the mobile phones are never switched off and today they had a phone each which I asked them to turn off and put away.
