Tingling after back massage

I had a new client last night and everything went great.

However after the massage she was complaining about a headache and also tingling in her shoulders. I explained that the headache was due to release of toxins and to drink lots of water - all explained in my After Care leaflet. However I was unsure what to say about the tingling.

Any advice appreciated.

She did mention after her massage that she had suffered whiplash a few years ago but didn't tell me during the consultation. She did say that her neck felt stiff during the treatment and was trying to get comfortable. I did ask her if she was ok. She also said that it takes her a while to relax and she possibly was tense.

I don't do massage but..... could the tingling not be from increased blood circulation due to the massage?

How can she not tell you about the whiplash????? Some people!

Definitely did not work on neck as not part of back massage.

Possibly just sensitive - some people are.

and yes...... she's had massages before so should have told me, but she may have been a bit nervous. But then found me through the FHT promotion of 2 4 1 so it would have been a professional service nonetheless.

I've had tingling after a shiatsu massage and I saw that as being a positive sign, although it is a bit worrying when someone omits to tell you that they had a whiplash injury till after the massage.

I have my questionnaire designed so that I specifically ask if they have had any accidents, I also ask them to sign ...

..."I have read the forgoing notes and to my knowledge I have not withheld any information that might affect my treatment. I confirm I have read the list of contraindications and have notified the therapist of any conditions on the list. I understand that massage does not take the place of a doctors care." signed........................ Dated..............................

Even with that sometimes I get clients add additional medical conditions either whilst doing the treatment or after it. So I guess there is no real safeguard. I do think, however, that you should make a note at the end of the questionnaire that the client failed to inform you before starting the treatment. What can you do!!!

I have to confess that when I went to see a new osteopath I completly forgot to tell her that I had been knocked over appx 4 months earlier. Because it wasnt the reason I had gone to see her it just slipped my mind so I can sympathise with clients when they drop little gems like that

All I can say in my defense is that it was before I trained as a therapist and knew better

Binah, thanks for your reply. My consultation form states everything that you've said except for accidents, which I will add in.

As Helmegirl stated, it probably slipped her mind but in my mind whiplash can be quite serious and I did note at the back of her record card that she mentioned this to me as she was dressed and ready to go.

Oh well - I see her next week again, so will go through the consultation form again.
