Tibetan Physician's Prayer

[Chia Obama]

per request, this is the prayer I use in my room every day I treat folks


May all living beings be free of suffering

May everything I do go to ensure that they may be free of suffering and the cause of suffering

May all beings have joy and the cause of joy

May I be the one to ensure, to remind them that they are in fact living in joy and have the causes of joy

May all living beings interrelate fully, lovingly, compassionately and joyously with one another, without any discrimination of partiality or near and far, or like or dislike

May I be the one that does everything in my power to see that they do this

May I be the one to make sure that this takes place





A few years ago, after sharing this prayer with my then mental health therapist, she remarked that this prayer put a lot of responsibility on one person [me] for the rest of the living beings........... my response was, "Well, if I don't try to spread joy and happiness and care about others having happiness and knowing how to recognize it, then, who will?" I just feel it is a prayer full of love, hope, and thanksgiving.

I have to sort of agree with your therapist, it feels like there's a lot of "let ME be THE ONE". Also I like to keep my prayers completely positive. Here's an alternative I would use:

May all living beings live in perfect wholeness and health.

May I be guided to work in accordance with their perfect health.

May all beings have joy and the cause of joy.

May I be guided to work in harmony with their joy.

May all living beings interrelate fully, lovingly, compassionately and joyously with one another.

May I be guided to work in accordance with their highest good.

With gratitude, I ask for guidance.

I'm glad so many of you found the same beauty in this prayer that I do.

It is all about being compassionately responsible and loving. And, if I choose to take on that responsibility knowingly, there's nothing wrong or ill-advised about it. I'd rather be the one trying to be responsible than having no one step up and bring those wonderful things to the fore.

May all sentient beings have happiness, and the cause of happiness
May all be free from sorrow, and the cause of sorrow
May all experience the neverending bliss that is sorrowless
May all live in equanimity, free from attachment and aversion.

This is repeated 3 times before meditating in one of the Buddhist traditions. It is a very large part of my meditation practise.

It is very fitting for healing work and a healing life!
