swelling?

hi, ive recently massaged a client who has diabetes [gp consent was given] and she also takes metaformin [for polycystic ovaries] she was absolutely fine after her massage but the next day she felt very achy and also she found that she was retaining alot of water, her legs almost doubled in size she took a couple of water tablets which he does take sometimes insead of the metaformin and this solved the problem. what i would like to know, if anyone can tell me is would it be safe to continue with further massages? or would i need to refer her back to her gp?

I would suggest she checks things with her doctor. I had a client once whose legs swelled right up 24 hours after a treatment. She'd been fine in the past, so checked with her doctor and he suggested it would be ok to continue with treatments. She never had this problem again. Everyone is different and you need to be reassured that this is ok.

thanks for the advice i will get her to consult her doctor but she is really keen to continue with massages

It may be a lymphatic problem - which can happen with diabetic patients. Definately refer to the GP. If he says treatment is OK, then make sure the massage is gentle on the legs and not aggressive, as there could be an element of neuropathy caused by the diabetes.
