Massage is great during pregnancy, but there are some precautions to take. If you are lying on your back, the therapist should make sure that you do not lie on your back for more than 15-20 minutes because the weight of the fetus can put pressure on major arterys and restrict your circulation. Also, although pregnancy massage tables are great, they are not necessary. The whole massage can be performed "side-lying" where you will lie on your side. The therapist should try to make you comfortable using pillows or bolsters to hug and put between your knees. Make sure that the therapist does not use aromatherapy, with the only exception being lavander. Also, the therapist should be cautious with your feet and ankles as well as your inner thighs. Most of all make sure that the therapist is aware of your pregnancy, if you're still not showing and in your first trimester. Don't be afraid to let the therapist know if you are uncomfortable or need anything at all. Concentrate on relaxing. If you are able to feel your baby already, it will either relax with you or it might be stimulated and do some gymnastics for you, which is just fine, it will mean he or she is happy! I love massaging prenant women and when I was pregnant massages were the best! I worked with one woman during her entire pregnancy. When her son was born, he was very drawn to me and I could comfort him when others (of course other than her) couldn't. He was always happy to see me. It was awesome. The likeliness of any problems is highly rare so relax and enjoy and allow yourself to enjoy your break.
