Also up towards Prime Hotel and in oriental Plaza Mall, this is normal actiivity but do not mistake the scammers (art students, practice english, have a cup of tea type scams) for pro's. The pro's are usually (as you said) actively canvassing foreigners and are quite forthright in how they do it.
Be aware that the mamasan is probably from a nearby ktv/nightclub and it is a 'companionship - buy lady drinks' type scam.

I have the same "GF problem" but the previous GF took great delight in walking a few steps behind me until I was approached and then stepped in and the pro was most embarrased = I like the term "barnacle" they often are so attached.

Seen, last Saturday night (April 5) a young mamsam aggressively touting to men (especially foreign groups) on the cnr of Wangfujing and Donganmen Sts (one block up from Chang'an St).
Also, earlier in the evening, several SYTs patrolling in the vicinity of KFC, opposite the Crown Plaza, a block further north.
Could not stop and sample, because "Barnacle", my new gf, was securely fastened.
