Stiff neck

Further to my previous post on my client with whiplash, she came again yesterday for a full swedish which went well, however she has problems with her neck, ever since the whiplash incident and finds it gets very stiff. After a massage it relieves itself for a couple of days and then back again. She also suffers with osteoarthritis which could be also a cause.

She wants me to sort out her stiff neck. I have suggested indian head massage but very gently. But I have asked her to see her GP and get permission as I don't want to be injuring her even more.

What would you do in my situation or ever encountered clients with this problem and how have you gone about resolving it.

p.s. didn't know where to post this as have done back massage and swedish massage but no where near the neck area.

you need to look at levator scapula, sternocleidomastoid, scalenes and splenius, all would benefit from massage, and simple range of movement exercises,
trapezius muscle wil take over and work too hard, promoting a round shouldered appearance, it is more lkely to be what your client is doing habitually rather than throwback to whiplash/ OA.
encourage ROM with passive stretching,

Hi Gaz, thanks I have mentioned all those muscles on her record card as that is where I found a lot of tension, also the rhomboids.

What kind of ROM exercises can you recommend or can you recommend a website as never learnt this at college.

whiplash can have many serious effects, has she had an xray? My advice would be not to touch her, until she can confirm that there is no underlying damage to the vertebrae.
