Sports Massage

Hi, haven't been in for a while, I'm here in southern Louisiana and due to Katrina, it's been a bit hard to get online till recently.
Started back to school Monday after a month out of school. We began our Sports Massage course and I just can't get into it!
Any one else had this problem? I seem to lean more to the healing aspect than this, I can't even get into the written material, much less the techniques!
HELP!

if you cannot switch to another specialty, then i would try to do my best in the course. the sports information is valuable because it covers injury recovery (and lots of other stuff) which is similar to medical massaage for injury recovery. even if you don't practice in either of these specific areas, there will be countless time you will intake a relaxtional client and find they have chronic issues stemming from sports or an accident.

I just started Sports Massage this week and I LOVE IT! I love all the strecthing and fast paced work! At first, I didn't think I would like it, but today was awesome :

I would agree with Mush.
Just because a technique is from sports massage does not mean you can't use it in other ways. Stretching and ROM work can be very relaxing as well as good for working with or around injuries.

Think of it this way. Just because you own a convertible, you don't always have to drive with the top down.

Give it a chance. It may be getting to you for other reasons.
If you live in LA then you either had or know someone who had troubles during the last few months.

I had a problem in school with Shiatsu. I could not grasp any of the material at all. I hated it 100%. The techiniques easy as they are couldn't get them....written work failed 2 test and had to retake them both. I stuck it out causei had no choice learned it as best as i could faked as musch as i could too. Now its over with and will never do that type of work. It just isn't me. Not every modality will suit you. You will find whats you and grow from that.

Hi, glad you're back!

Not sure if this will be helpful to you but I thought my specialty would be something completely different than it turned out to be. And, I thought I would hate chair massage class and it turned out that I really liked it.

I think it's possible to change your mind many times about what you will end up doing with your massage education. Go in to school with one passion and then come out with another, or more than one area of interest maybe. Even after you've been in practice for a while you may change again!

Try and learn everything to the best of your ability because you never know what you'll end up doing with it.

Thanks everyone for such great advise! I'm just gonna learn it to the best of my ability and go from there! I do see how some of the techniques could certainly be useful in my practice later on. I hadn't even thought of that. I'm looking at this in a whole new light, THANKS!

Lissangel - it now sounds as though you may have come to grips with the reality of finishing the course work. I totally agree with what's been said already. You never know, at a later time in the future, you might find that you absolutely LOVE sports massage (or maybe just some aspects of it). Good luck.
