Has anyone out there used this on-line course and had any career from studying with SNHS. I want to study with AOR but the course near me cost £1500 which I find a little steep.

I really want to work as a reflexologist but there are so many organisations I am getting too confused who is best choice. I currently work full-time in an office and would like a complete change. Any ideas?

hi rabbit,

i have done a couple of SNHS courses and i wouldnt recommend them to non bodywork folk. you dont get any supervised practical work and i think case studies have only just been introduced.

i think if this is a change of career for you, its a better idea to start off with a far more recognised school, like AoR, ITEC, VTCT etc. i dont believe shortcuts are a good way forward. i only did the SNHS courses because i have been a therapist for a number of years now, starting off with ITEC and the basic anatomy, physiology and body massage course.

Ouch! 1500 is insane, the AOR courses should be in the region of 250-400! Keep looking and I hope something more reasonably priced crops up. Someone is creaming it there! Have you been able to contact the AOR for a list of centres? Maybe if you mention where in the country you are, someone might know of a school within vague commuting distance. Even driving a fair way to the course would be less than that!

I did find £1500 a bit too expensive but I thought as I live in Kent that would be around the normal price.

Hello , i wouldn't say £1500 is too OTT, and I don't think that school would say they are "creaming" it!
if it is a private course then they have to pay the tutors, pay for the venue , and cover all the admin over heads including advertising . Any course run by a college or adult education department will be very heavily subsidised to be able to come in at £200-400 They might only have small class sizes too - so these costs need to be covered by fewer students.

Janey is right. There aren't many subsidised courses for AOR around, I know, I couldn't find one and the one's I looked at where in excess of £1500.

Rabbit, have a look back at postings on ITEC versus VTCT etc and see what has been said and then you can have a think about it. I certainly wouldn't recommend doing an online or distance course in body therapies if you are new to it.

My experience of AOR course fees is that the range is between about £900 and £1500 in my area. If this is typical you may be able to find one a little cheaper than the £1500 you've been quoted. As I understand it, one of the reasons AOR accredited courses are more expensive is simply that they are accredited and AOR is becoming more and more the standard requirement for Reflexology (or so my tutors tell me!!).

Most colleges seem to allow payment by monthly installments if that helps.

you could always train with say ITEC and then you can upgrade to be AOR recognised at a fraction of the cost!

I think the IIR charges between £800 and £1100 for their courses. They're good too. If you want a good course and you want to be a good therapist I really think you should be prepared to pay the price. How else are we going to be recognised as professionals? Other complimentary therapists - accupuncturists, homeopaths etc pay a lot more for their courses. IMO you get what you pay for. I certainly wouldn't want to go to a newly qualified therapist who had had no supervised practical training. You're going to be asking people to pay quite a lot of money for a treatment and you're dealing with people's health here.

Brian, this is slightly misleading I think. Sorry. But I am not AOR qualified and chose not to bother as it wouldn't get me any more clients. Most people don't even know what the AOR is. Don't get me wrong, please, I would have done AOR if I could, but it wasnt possible. I did ITEC and have plenty of clients who are happy with the treatments. I really don't think that it is necessary to be AOR qualified at this time and unless that changes I won't bother.

I am all for improving standards etc, but as we have all said before, it is the therapist that counts. Nobody re-books with a therapist who is not any good. I would also like to say that I have encountered AOR therapists who don't get clients. They can have the qualification but if they haven't put the work in or had the practice it means nothing.

It's what you do with your training that counts and there are many therapists working in clinical settings and even within the NHS who are not AOR trained.
