Serratus Posterior Superior/Inferior

Okay, I know these two muscles are located in the back bilaterally, but what are they deep to and what is deep to them?Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

without pulling out my flashcards (i'm at work right now), i'm pretty sure they are against the bone(ribs) since they are located in the deep truck. the traps should be on top of them.

Yes they are VERY DEEP... and some say that they can't be palpated.  I disagree.  When you are working on the rhomboids and you have very stubborn knots that don't seem to go away those are in the Serratus Post Superior.  Problems in the Serratus Post Inferior and QL also mask eachother.  Once the spasms and initial pain is relieved then they can be identified.

Yes, I agree...both serratus post. sup and post are VERY deep (right next to the rib cage) palpable, ESPECIALLY in people with chronic breathing issues as both are involved in forced ihalation (sup) and exhalation (inf).  Try working on the rhomboids with someone in your class with say, chronic asthma, and have them forcefully breathe in and out and see if you can feel them.  It takes a keen sense of touch, but you will definately feel something!  Regards,Krystyne

Thanks everyone! We were working on breathing and these were two of the four muscles being addressed (the others being Serratus Anterior and Transversus Thoracis {which is posterior surface of the gladiolus of the sternum}). Very interesting. Anyway, it makes it easier for me if I know which 'layer' a muscle is.

ah, Gaspen... have you read Bob King's article"The Secret Serratus Society: Releasing the Saw-Toothed Respiratory Restrictors"It was in the Sept/Oct Massage magazine in 1998. It's a good read. I also took his CE course on "Unlocking the Thoracic Cage"... which I found most helpful.Does Bob King still stress the importance of "Wall Angels?" *eg*I'm currently eyeing up his latest offering to the WI-AMTA... "Posture, Pain and Foot Pronation: Myofascial Therapy for the Lower Extremities." Feb. 26/27... Considering I've taken a couple other courses through Bob King and Earl Conner (CSMT) ... I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy this one too!Yeah, think I'll have to plan a lil' CE this winter.

Yep - wall angels and other sundry self-care exercises are all still part of the trainin'. He lectured in our class Tuesday on Emotional Release and I was very impressed! He really knows how to present material and engage his audience. He woulda done wonders as a traveling salesman or a evangelical pitchman. Actually, I'll probably go there as well - where in WI?

Gaspen it's in Pewaukee/Waukesha, which is like the southwestern edge of Milwaukee. My guess is because of the location...Earl Conner will be assisting... at least I hope so!  (Earl's from there.)Bob's a pretty interesting guy... but I really like Earl's teaching style even better.This would be my 4th CE taken with either Bob King and/or Earl Conner and the CSMT.(Thoracic, head & neck, arms and now.... legs.)I'll PM you with cost and contact info for the class.Though the class isn't until Feb. 26 & 27th... apparently they want everybody committed to it by Dec. 15th.*breaks piggy bank... counts the change*
