Selling products

Hi, my name is Carole and I'm an aromatherapist with my own business.

I have a query regarding selling my aromatherapy products. Basically, I have a friend who has a web based business and he would like to sell my gift sets through his website. I just wondered whether there is any particular requirement with regards to what appears on the label e.g. is there a standard that should be followed regarding the info on the label other than the obvious ones.

Hi Carole,

It would depend on what products you are selling really.

If you are mixing and blending your own products then obviously you will need to be very precise with the labelling as if someone is allergic to any ingredients then this could be quite nasty.

If you are just re-branding and selling on products then you shouldn't need to worry too much, just make sure that your professional liability insurance covers you to sell products, and also enquire as to how high your turnover can be before the insurers start charging an additional premium.

I'm with a company called Towergate (formerly SMG) anf they offer product liability as part of their standard package. This will cover you against any claim regarding a defective product etc. They will cover you for upto £1000 turnover free of charge, then they will charge an additional £52.50 to cover you to sell upto £10,000 worth of products, which if you think about it is a pretty good deal!

There are very strict guidelines concerning labelling of all cosmetic products on the market under the Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations 2004.

A good place to go for all the information needed is the Aromatherapy Trade Council website http://www.a-t-c.org.uk/ .

The following is taken from their website.

'Cosmetics, e.g. ready-blended aromatherapy products using essential oils/carrier oils, bath oils, etc., sold to the public, in which case they are subject to the Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations 2004. Labelling is very strict too and all the ingredients have to be listed using their INCI names (all explained with previous link), as well as Best Before dates, batch numbers etc.

As steveo points out, it is really imporrtant to check with your insurance company if you are covered to sell your products to the general public.
