Seated Massage

Maybe it's just me missing it, but people don't seem to mention seated massage much these days.
I have a chair for this treatment but I never really took to it, and wasn't over impressed with the course I did.

I'm thinking of selling my chair but are people still buying them?

Hi Paula,

I've not thought that far ahead yet. If I do sell, it would be handy to do it locally to save on postage but again, I've not looked into it.
I was just wondering how many people still do seated massage or are training in it.

hey treacle, i recently qualified as an holistic massage therapist but when i finished the course I bought a chair, i work with people with learning disabilities and some have never had a massage before and the chair has been a good way for some of them to try a treatment. also as they dont remove their clothes for the massage it gives them the opportunity to have a massage in a safe environment and in a way they feel comfortable. hopefully overtime this will help to build their confidence in me as a therapist as this is not my usual role in work. However i have found the chair is not suitable for some as they have difficulty sitting in the position required so for some individuals i use an ordinary chair, but this is mainly for face and hand massages.

I don't use mine much but when I use it I leave it out for a couple of days as it always draws in questions about it and I then get a few appointments booked for a seated massage.
I've recently started doing a bamboo seated massage, it is very visual and goes down a storm at health promotion days.

its using lengths of bamboo and rattan to apply massage with. I do a full body massage and a seated massage with the bamboo pieces.

The benefit of using bamboo is that it applies a deep even pressure without you having to use your hands to apply the pressure.

well the bamboo is long and thin, and although some people warm it up, I use mine at room temperature.
you use them I suppose the same as hot stones as if to "iron" the client, but you can do a lot of pivot work so really get into the muscles. I've never had a client wince before in hot stone but in bamboo it really penetrates to a deep level and you have to check with your client.
It works fabulously on thigh and calf muscles!

I've had a chair for about five years, ever since I did a seated acupressure, but hardly ever used it. On the last part of my No Hands training we did a chair routine and it was fantastic. Great for corporate work, public demonstrations or anywhere when getting undressed might be a problem.

Most of what we do is office massage with chairs. The last couple of years have been challenging as corporate clients cut back on spend. These days we do fewer client marketing jobs (eg press launches, exhibition stands) but more internal staff wellbeing events.

We think employers realise people are working harder and are under pressure so they need to look after their staff to keep up morale and productivity and we are seeing more activity compared to last year.

At a time when there's less work around it's interesting that there is a big growth in one day seated massage courses. We started in 1998 and trained over several weekends and even now most therapists we work with do the same. Think one day courses are great as a try out but, understandably, therapists who have done more training tend to do a better massage and they're the people we want to work with.
