Sassafras

Does anyone know if Sassafras is an essential oil? A client has been told that this blended with juniper, thyme and rosemary is really good for arthritis. I've had no experience of this and a websearch brings up information about the plant, but don't know if it's an e.o. or it may be a herbal preparation.

Does anyone know where I can get it.

Hi Lesley,

Sassafras is listed in the back of the Fragrant Pharmacy (by Valerie Ann Worwood) as an essential oil to avoid under any circumstances. She doesn't say why, but it'd be worth trying to find out.

Hi Lesley

Sassafras (sassafras albidum) is a highly toxic oil and shouldn't be used either internally or externally (tisserand essential oil safety book). It has a very high content of safrole 85-90% and therefore is deemed unsuitable for aromatherapy use at all. This begs the question who recommended that your client use this oil? were they qualified? if so this is extremely worrying as it is highly carcinogenic!!

Can I suggest another oil - Eucalytpus Citrodoria as this is very good for arthritis especially if it is used in conjuction with a green clay poultice (very useful when the arthritis flares up and massage would be contra-indicated).

Ps There are other types of sassafras from Brazil and China but these to are not to be used.

Thank you both. My client got her information from a friend (who is apparently going to visit me as a client soon) who is a Health Visitor (not terribly relevant). But I think the friend must have got her information from somewhere else.

Apparently they have been trying to get sassafras, but have obviously been unsuccessful.

I will call her today and tell her that under no circumstances should this be used.
