2330 BC – picture depicting a reflexology treatment on the walls of the tomb of Ankhmahor at Saqqara in Egypt
1582-83 – Books published on zone therapy (the theory that the body is split into 10 longitudinal zones and is the basis of reflexology) in Europe
1690’s – Cherokee Native American tribes practising a form of reflexology
1893 – Sir Henry Head researches the connections between pressure on the skin and internal organs in England
1910’s – Dr William Fitzgerald works as a ear, nose and throat doctor in the US and discovers that applying pressure to points on the hands and feet produces an anaesthetic effect to another part of the body.
1915 – Article written by Dr Edwin Bowers “To Stop That Toothache, Squeeze Your Toe!” in the US.
1919 – Dr Riley in the US writes a book, Zone Therapy Simplified and maps out the reflexes on the feet.
1930’s – Eunice Ingham worked with Dr Riley and further developed the foot charts and used the term “reflexology”
1938 – Eunice Ingham writes the book The Stories The Feet Can Tell Thru Reflexology and begins to teach reflexology throughout the US.
1960’s – Doreen Bayley, a student of Eunice Ingham, introduced reflexology to the UK
1984 – Ten reflexologists met to form the Association of Reflexologists. Today they are one of the world’s largest Reflexology organisations with over 7,500 members.
