Reflexology for someone trying to concieve

Hi there,

I am a fully qualified reflexologist and I have been asked to perform some treatments on someone who is having difficulty conceiving and is currently having IVF. I am a little nervous about it and wondred if anyone can gove me any pointers (areas I should avoid/work more on) I am happy to do the treatments, it's just I want to make sure I give the best possible treatment that I can for this lady

although this was posted in the essential oil forum, it went into reflexology. 2 schools of thought on IVF, clomid and reflexology... personal decisions by you and client to be made.

Rosie's link refers to people undergoing IVF. Presumably your client isn't at that stage (and may never get to that stage). I have recently undertaken some advanced reflexology in this and would recommend the following.

If possible, full treatments should be undertaken twice a week throughout the month. In addition, on days 12, 13 and 14 of a 28 day cycle, carry out the opening sequence and then work on the following. Hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid and helper, spine (extra work on lumbar and spinal twist), finger vibrations on dorsal side of foot, foot wringing, adrenals, ovaries, uterus, fallopians (with horseshoe), ankle rotations and shuffles and some relaxation work.

If possible carry out the treatments as close as possible to the evening in the client's own home (for obvious reasons). Ideally you should also do some work on the partner if he is willing.

Sorry Rosie and Sarah, I did miss the bit about IVF. I would say that the above advice would still be recommended, although this lady may not feel up to or have the time (or money) for the number of treatments I have recommended. Obviously this can be scaled down accordingly to need, but the areas I have highlighted are all the ones that I would give extra time to, even in a full treatment.

There is also a company, called nourish www.nourish-fertility.com which provides nutritional supplements specifically for preconceptual care and those with fertility issues.

Rosie the workshop was run by the Middlesex School of Complementary Medecine - I believe they run this course quite often.

I trained with David at Barnet college - he taught me the body massage, reflexology and IHM. He is lovley.

It was the Female Problems course that I did. Apart from the content, it really helped my confidence as a therapist, being able to exchange information with other reflexologists and making me realise that the way I was taught (which I was beginning to question) isn't the only way.

Hi - A client has just seen me yesterday, desperate for to conceive. She has undergone 3 IVFs and is not able to have any more until a further 3 months. In the meantime she is totally stressed out and as I am a relatively new Reflexologist I was going thru forums when I came across yours. I would love to attend the MSCM course but that is not till Sept. Can you please elaborate on what horseshoe around fallopian tubes mean? After Chrismas she will be coming to see me regularly, 2xweek or more.

As well as thumb walking ovary to uterus along the fallopian (twice on each foot), follow this by bracing your forefinger/thumb area over the whole fallopian area.

For instance, on the right foot, firmly grip across the top of the foot with left hand, put thumb pad of right hand over uterus area at the same time as the pad on the forefinger of the right hand over the ovary to form a horeshoe shape touching the whole fallopian area. Rotate foot in both directions whilst doing this. This should bring increased energy to the area.

Do the same (with opposite hands) on the other foot.

Hope that makes sense - I think as soon as you do it, you'll realise what I mean!

Panicky, don't be worried about it. If she is stressed then the treatment itself will go a long way to help her. I have done a few now who are waiting for IVF treatment and they really do benefit.

If it helps her get pregnant then great, but concentrate for the time being on getting her through such a stressful time and that will be really beneficial.

I know that Sue Calvert caused some controversy with her article in Woman's Own and her Babymaker webpage (link referred to above), but when I was last in touch with her, she told me she had 10 more pregnancies in Nov/Dec, so you could say the end justifies the means? In fact she said she'd been so busy her fingers were dropping off.

I've treated many clients for sub-fertility now and one thing I always stress to them on the first visit is that I'm treating holistically and that conception is a secondary aim which will come from restoring good hormone balance. This helps them realise that it wont be a 1 month job necessarily (although it has happened) and they dont feel so disappointed when they have a period. Takes the pressure of them , and me a bit.

I use the linking from precision reflexology, and the spinal and hormonal links always feel very powerful. I link ovary and uterus from around the heel and to the pituitary. Clients often report heavier, more normal periods. So the hormones seem to respond quickly.

Ive just heard from an IVF client that shes 10 weeks pregnant. I am so happy for her, she is 42 and had been told she had 'old eggs'!! and unlikely to conceive. She had some of her frozen embryo's implanted. I treated her up to implantation and then said I would not treat her again until she had a period (if), it seemed the right thing in her circumstances.

Anyway, she is keen to have another treatment now and am reall looking forward to seeing her. She is feeling very nauseous at the mo.

Good advice about treating the client holistically for conception. I have husband and wife coming to me this week. Moving house soon and trying for a baby. How stressful is that? Another client came to see me with 3 attempts on IVF, all failed. She is totally stressed and emailed her articles on Babymaker and nourish. Jan, please explain about Linking ie Spinal and Hormonal Links?

I place the thumb of one hand on the pituitary (opposite to foot working) and with other hand span around the heel with thumb on ovary reflex and middle finger on uterus reflex, then visualise the link with hormones flowing well and healthily. If its before ovulation I press really firmly, if after, I just hold. The spinal link, is similar holding the forebrain and pituitary with thumb and spanning down the spine with other fingers, move other hand round to hold uterus and ovaries, supporting foot that way. I visualise a very healthy blood flow to the repros and spine while doing that.

If you do reiki too, it just seems to flow at the time. Do other people find that??

Our tutor was very keen on reiki, intention and visualisations, I find it really helps me to focus. We were told that if we do Reiki, we should tell the client as you cant help it coming through and they may not want it. I've only had one refuse it, and I felt very limited but managed not to do it.

PS the book is 'A guide to precision reflexology' by Jan Williamson. I was very lucky as my tutor was very keen on linking and a frequent visitor to Devon, as she was a friend of the originator, and taught us some.

Jan I agree that linking is incredibly powerful and you can just 'feel' when you are on the right points.

I have a client of 40 trying to get pregnant who had a miscarriage. I mistakenly held the heart reflex with the L5 reflex whilst fiddling around and she burst into tears. She let out a lot of grief, it happened on the next treatment but less so and she said she felt so much better.

She isn't pregnant again yet, but she seems to have adopted a healthy attitude to it and has just got a new job which she says she wouldn't have got if she were pregnant and she says that she feels so much better in herself about things.

To me it was proof indeed that linking is very effective. I sometimes have to search around for L5 but as I say, I know when I have got it.
