RE: eczema and massage

I have had an initial enquiry from a lady with eczema asking whether she can have a massage. I have never treated anyone with this condition before. I know it wouldnt be wise to treat her if the eczema is open or weeping but if it is mild can it do her harm? What about using her own emoliant she uses at home as the medium? I understand that eczema can be triggered by stress so I am sure massage would be good on an emotional level. Any advice very welcome.[&:]

Eczema can be helped by gentle massage, and you are correct in saying that it shouldnt be treated if its open or weeping.

You need to check the type of lubricant you use, as some can be irritating to skin conditions.

There are lots of aromatherapy blends you can buy that are effective in easing eczema too.

As long as the skin is not open, I don;t see why not. Using her own emolient sounds like a good idea. But you may want to avoid it if it is a steroid cream or has someother medication in (you'll have some of it on YOUR skin...).

Hi.

I took a baby massage course when my boy was about 6 months old BECAUSE he had eczema, and it really did help. All we used was unrefined sunflower oil as a medium. With my boy the key is catching it early before it gets to that sore bleeding stage and it usually goes away quickly. Best of luck.

Hi all, I agree that massage can help with eczema. However, after reading through 5 pages of small print from my liability indemnity insurance, I am not covered to massage a person with eczema. Seems very strange.

Just thought I'd let everyone know. I suggest checking your insurance, as it may invalidate any claims should they arise.
