Got 2 recommendation for you:

1. 88 (nightclub/KTV) - this place is big and its got good vibes. The target demographic from my one and only time there back in June looks like middle income 20something locals. Its also a favorite it seems with young foreigners, from looks and demeanor seems to be either students and/or backpackers/tourist on budget. That time I was there I was with a hot mid 20s Sichuanese mamasan who tried to interest me in some FL girls at Judy's but I ended up paying a small escort fee to her to show me around town and she took me to the Malones, Manahattan and finally ended up at 88.

Had a real good time there, made friends with several SH locals, got totally wasted, did not remember how i got into a taxi and make it back to my hotel room the next morning but checked my wallet and still had around 2k rmb and my credit card lol...think I gave the taxi driver a 100rmb note and insisted he keep the change but found i had 50 rmb loose notes in my shirt pocket the next day. Didnt manage to take the mamasan back but I could have if only my other weakness of character did not get in the way. Never did get her number but think she regularly hangs out at Judy's.

2. Muse - I am not sure whether there is 2 locations or 1 but I think the one I went to is M2. Anyway this place is different from 88, the spending range is higher, caters to more the cashed up little emperors, foreign expat and partygoers. The talent there is higher than 88 and majority local, but it seems the girls while not looking to make overnight savings/deposit transactions, are there looking for a long term checking account/ATM (aka boyfriend/sugardaddy).

And for pure novelty sake you should check out RichBaby, formerly Babyface until some douchebag thought it be cool to rename it so. Its demographic is the super rich, their entourage and people who thinks its cool to be seen there. Not my kind of place, but I would donate my left kidney and half my liver to drive some of the cars parked outside. Its like a full season of Top Gear supercars right in down town Shanghai.

My trip in June nearly done me in due to lack of sleep - by day I was doing the expo and sightseeing with the oldies and my cousin from GZ and by night I was prowling. The hotel is called the Baolong Home Hotel. Great value, comfortable rooms in a very central location - less than 100m from Manhattan to the front door of the hotel. Beats the budget chains by a mile.

Update: just checked on one of the popular booking sites and it looks like they are either charging expo prices or that business has dramatically improved with the relocation of Manhattan/Judy's. Prices are up! Still very convenient though at 650RMB for a queen room, I would estimate its about 200RMB higher than this time last year.

Be careful when searching as there are many hotels in Shanghai that use the Baolong name. Make sure you search for Baolong 'Home' Hotel.

You went to the wrong place.

There's a bar called "Old Manhattan" across the Hilton Hotel in Huashan Lu. It is basically a bar catering to people who live in the Hilton and who don't know where to have fun in Shanghai. The real and infamous Manhattan Bar is in Nanyang Lu, near the old Tongren Lu Bar street.

I went by Manhattan last Friday night. No working girls except bar girls. I couldn't even get the girl to go back with me. Stopped by another bar called Shanghai Nights, I think. I know the exact location you are talking about. I guess i need to spend more time walking the streets AFTER getting wasted at Manhatten's, Malone's, BigBamboo, etc. BTW, if you are looking for value, head to Malone's on Monday nights (just around the Corner from Manhattan's)....50 RMB gets you a burger and a pint of Tiger and all beers after that are just 20 RMB. Awesome band starts at 9:30PM. A few girls will show up there. In fact, I have seen maybe 2 that fit the Angela Jolie description and they always seem busy so I guess they can ask top dollar. Big Bamboo offers some good value a couple of nights a week as well. They have a new Hooters in Shanghai now as well which has some very beautiful Chinese girls, but I suppose if you chat with them long enough, maybe there's an outside shot with them. I'm scheduled to be in Shanghai again November 8 to 22 maybe we can grab a beer.

And enjoy Shanghai.....it's an amazing city once you get used to it....lots of little pubs and resturants tucked away in corners and back alleyways. There's a few more pickup bars on some other threads in here.

I know Singapore is an expensive City also. Jakarta's great I was there for a week early this year doing some Business, very beautiful girls, I went to a bar called Immigrant one night for a quiet drink and repeatedly got approached and asked to join groups of girls. Have spent alot of time in the Phils not so much Manila tho (difficult place to hang out, abit like New Delhi in that you are never given a seconds peace by touts), in general places in SE Asia are a different story to China.

The problem with China is the language barrier and girls that aren't pros aren't very approachable, I find that they get very shy. In places like the Phills and Thailand I can get girls numbers in Malls, not being cocky here but I'm a young confident person and its not difficult anyway! I know expats much older than me that are good talkers and have no problems meeting girls either.

Shezhen is a great place for action, HK is even more highend than Shanghai. As for alot of the smaller Cities I have visited, difficult to get action without the language, I went to try and get a massage once in Tianjin and they tried to put me into a swimming pool

I guess I can understand your point about Shanghai being awash with money obviously prices are going to be higher. There also has to be different tiers in the sex trade, cant all be high end stuff. I know the lower you go the filthier it gets..

As for the street walkers you will find plenty of them throughout Nanjing Lu, its hard to miss them really. I met alot hanging around outside the clubs beside the Big Bamboo Bar, the later in the night it is the more open to negotiation they become. Needless to say keep an eye on your wallet and be safe...

My hotel was across from the Big Bamboo, cheap and cheerfull the way I like it, when my Companies not fitting the bill. Perhaps someone knows the name of this street and the hotel?

You are looking in the wrong city, dude. Even here in Singapore girls go for about that same rate. You are better off checking out 5-star hotels in developing countries....think Jakarta or Manila. For example, when I lived in Jakarta I could walk into the main pub in Shangri-La and have dozens of classy ladies to choose from for around US$50 - US$80/night. Same with the sports bar in Shangri-La in Manila. In singapore you are looking at 150 to 200 euros for all night for your description. FYI- Shangai is awash with money nowadays.....even the average college educated workers make about as much in salary as in a developed country now.

BTW, what street where you on when those streetwalkers approached? What hotel were you staying at? Wouldn't mind having a good long drunk fuck for RMB 150 on the right drunkened night. I agree RMB 1,000 is too much, but that seems to be standard going rate for a decent looking gal nowadays.

Ive been to the Manhattan, Dec 2009, not my cup of tea at all.
Lots of Fillipino girls and Western guys throwing money around the place. Last night I've been in Manhattan, first time in the new location and I never picked up from the previous location, I dindt have the time to get inside that a beautiful asian girl was coming out with her new partner but she gave to me a business card, one more step inside, the waiter was asking me what drink and a cute young philippines girl was going out alone, so I asked her 'where are you going' and she told me "I was waiting for you" and I said 'so lets go'... the waiter didnt have the time to take my order. Hang around Manhattan long enough & you'll notice that its not all filipinas. Definitely a good contingent of Vietnamese and a smattering of Thai & Chinese. I've also met/seen gals from Cambodia, Nigeria, and Russia/Eastern bloc countries in there, although they're few & far between.
