Question about Body Mechanics

Hi,

A friend who's going to Bodywork school recently told me that
80% of therapists quit after 2 years because of pains caused
by incorrect body mechanics.

Does anyone know of a dvd on body mechanics? I saw some
books on amazon, but I think it's easier to learn from a dvd.

Hi Beachlover. Welcome to MassagePlanetL.

Your school should be teaching proper body mechanics very clearly and persistently.

I have not heard that statistic before. I think there are MANY reasons so many leave the profession, and I really don't know that 80% leave in such a short amount of time, anyway. Who knows? But body mechanics are very important and do help us to avoid pain.

I don't know of any dvd's that go into it, but like I said, I learned it in MT school.

I learned years ago in Hawaii with Hawaiian elders and healers. Their tradition has been passed down from generation to generation and my main teacher who was 70 when he taught me, had learned from his grandfather when he was 8 years old.

In the old Hawaiian system, everyone practiced massage - even the chief.

After learning from them, I had had no desire for formal massage school although I feel that their are pros/cons on both sides.

I have been sharing what they taught me and it has been a wonderful experience. As I do yoga, my body is in excellent shape. However for those that don't do yoga or regular stretching I feel there is definitely a need for a higher understanding of body mechanics.

Anytime you are in the same posture everyday for many hours, it can be dangerous...

Where anyone is getting a figure like "80%" is beyond me. 80% of those who quit do so because of body-mechanics errors? Or 80% who go into the field, quit? Show me a study or a survey and I'll be more likely to listen.

Just curious, don't you have regulations and whatnot to meet? Can you obtain the required quailifications / certifications with such informal training? I ask because honestly, you are coming off as a spammer, BIG TIME.

I'm also confused. In another post, beach-lover said that he had a successful massage practice in Vancouver. However, it's illegal to practice massage in British Columbia without 3000 hours of education. On the off-chance he was talking about Vancouver, Washington, you still need 500 hours of training there.

Just as a clarification, under certain circumstances you may practice in BC calling yourself a "bodyworker" rather than a "massage therapist" -- a colleague in my building legally works both sides of the border this way. (She does have the required Washington license as well.)
