Question About 1st time Clinic

Ok Here we go. I just scheduled my clinic for school. Were you nervous the first time ? How did you do ? How do you get used to massaging a new person you never met before. I know it sounds weird. But just scared I might do something wrong or mess up in some way. Thanks

The first appointment I had in the clinic I was a nervous wreck! But our instructor told us up front not to worry about your first time in clinic, because in all likelihood you will know far more than your client will. Which is true so long as it isn't another instructor or another therapist. Best advice is to relax, you'll do great!

Seems like forever ago, but I remember being far more concerned about getting the SOAP notes "right" than giving a less than desirable massage. It will be fine. It can actually be something to be excited about... a milestone made. To work with someone like you would when you're out of school. A step closer to being where you want to be.

How exciting! Take a deep breath and relax into it.

True, all the average client wants is to feel good! There will be one or two that are the exception to the rule. We had a couple of people that came weekly and they thought it was their duty to make sure they critiqued every part of the massage. I might add that one of them came to me last year at my work and I found him to be a terribly unhappy know-it-all. So don't sweat people like that.

If you do have a therapist on your table just remember that they too just want to feel good! I had to work on one of my instructors and she gave great feedback! Just take your time, relax, and breath. Your client will pick up that you are in control and confident!

We had our first mock clinic on this past tuesday. and I had to work on someone that already graduated before we even learned a full body massage! (and then we learned it right after.... :roll: ) as long as you know what you are doing the only hard part is the timing, a hour go's really fast. and getting set up and broken down. Otherwise it's not as bad as you think.

The great thing about the school student clinic is that you CAN make mistakes, and be nervous, and write lousy SOAP notes, and all of that. This is an opportunity to make those mistakes and learn from them in a supportive, constructive environment. This is what you are in school for. Your teachers are there to help you with all of the issues that may come up for you. Take advaneforum.xxxe of that. As we all know, the "real" world is not always as forgiving.

And I agree with the statement that working on other therapists is great. I know some folks get nervous about that, but I love it. Who better to give you good, educated feedback about what you are doing?

As for the nervousness, timing, etc. Yes that will definitely be there, but after a few clinics you will begin to find your rhythm, and things will become much easier and more natural.
