product licence or certification

hello everyone
In the past couple of weeks I read online somewhere (but can't remember where!) that if you make products to sell they need to be verified by a chemist and certified fit. So even if using base products containing nothing nasty at all - if I blend 2 or more things together it counts as a new recipe and needs to be checked. I vaguely remember 2 prices, £50 something and over £100 but can't for the life of me find any information about it now. I made some handcream and a few people want to buy it and so I need to get this certification.

this is an interesting comment, as there are people selling on various auction sites hand made products, soaps, lotions, etc and I wonder if they are all certified to sell

hi well I emailed the cosmetic safety assessment link (thank you Jo for sending that) and they replied fairly promptly and said that yes, if I want to sell a product to the public then it must have an assessment. Even though the products I am buying are from a reputable company and I am only blending their ingredients together. I can do that and use it in treatments but if I want to sell it generally then the licence for the hand cream I want to make will be £45 and I need one for each new product I would want to introduce.

Yes you do need certification. I went on an Aromantic Course a while back and learnt to make natural skincare products. I developed a range and then had to get them certified - I spent around £450 on certification. Instead of getting a certificate for each individual cream, you can create a recipe for creams and then include all the ingredients you would possibly use in a range of creams (not going overboard of course)- that way you can mix and match ingredients after that so don't have to get each individual one done - works out cheaper that way!
You can sell your home-made products to your existing clients without having to have them tested though.

Hi there I use a moisture base and carrier oil and then a drop of carrot seed oil for a lovely honey colour and then some essential oils. Its very rich so good for massage but absorbs shortly after you stop if that makes sense!
