Presentation Advice

Hi everyone

Here's a good one for all of you.

I have been asked to give a massage talk to a well-known group of dieters - mainly women and I am stuck on what exactly to present to them. I am worried that they will be wanting me to say that massage will help with their weight loss and am concerned as how to give across information. Any ideas of what to include and say. Obviously, I am not being paid for the presentation and am hoping to use it as a marketing tool to get extra business. I do not want to make any false claims but at the same time do not want to put them off in the first minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've got a great opportunity here and I'm sure you'll make the most of it! Why not start by answering the most obvious question about whether massage will help them lose weight... I'm pretty sure that it doesn't but you're bound to get asked it (I'm always being asked this about reflex!). BUT... wouldn't massage help them as they lose weight to rid the body of toxins, help with fluid retention and improve the lymph drainage? Also many overeaters eat when they're tense, angry, lonely, bored, etc.. Having a regular massage treatment with you may help them to relax and crave food less. Maybe this will get them thinking about ways they can complement their weight loss regime. Also if they are exerising regularly (and they should be!) a massage may be welcome to ease those aching muscles, and therefore mean they will be able to exercise more often and effectively and lose more weight!!

Sounds like the ideal group to give a talk to!

Don't forget to give out plenty of information including your leaflets/business cards.

If so, you could check out their website to see what they focus on, and sign up for the newsletter to get info/ideas

Modern weight loss groups do include topics such as

visualisation

self-care

self-esteem

relaxation


Sarah has mentioned some excellent ideas.

How long is your talk..30 minutes..45 minutes?

You could break it down into points

1) Self Introduction

2) What massage is/how you got into it/training

3) Who has had a massage/what did they get out of it

(bit of audience participation will break uo the waterfall of words)

4)Examples of people's level of relaxation/self image improving after a massage

5)Suggest it could be a treat for themselves after they reach a goal eg after every 4LBS

6)Could they give each other gentle hand massage?

7)Do you use essential oils..peppermint to reduce appetite.vanilla to quench cravings for sweets

8) Depending on the number there, would it be worth offering a taster to one winner eg everyone writes their address/email on a list, and you contact one who comes out of the hat....and can send them all a follow up letter later in the month/year

It offers a free online presentation skills for therapists course and it really helped me when I needed to do a talk last Autumn.

The guys have offered some fantastic advise which I have listened to myself being a very new Holistic Tutor who is going into talks and workshops. Thankyou )

I feel I could offer something different here by telling you truthfully that I am extremelly overweight myself and do benefit from massage.
There are different reasons why people are overweight.
* Overeating (this is a reason but one that most people believe us overweighters do) NOT always so
* Eating at the wrong times
* Eating one large meal and skipping all others
* Not excersising what so ever
* Allergic reactions to food ie wheat intolerance

Personally I fall into the category of eating one large meal and skipping all others and not excersising. This leads to very slow circulation which means that my lymph drainage is really sluggish.
Massage is ideal for me when I do lose weight. I had a major op last year and piled the stones on afterwards but before this weight loss was easy for me if I eat small meals regularly, excersised by walking instead of driving and had a regular massage. I swore by it because being overweight and beginning a regime of walking would cause oedema. Because it means reeducating your whole body including your physiology into doing something different than it normally does I needed the massage to kick start my lymph system or I would just lose the weight but look puffed out because my body was still holding onto the water and toxins.

Thanks everyone.

I gave my first talk yesterday morning. It went really well with only one or two slip of the tongues!!!!

A great response and I actually had four bookings made out of about twenty people so not too bad. Hopefully this will improve as I do!!!!!!!!! Managed to pass out leaflets to everyone so you never know it may result in more.......

Here's to the next one in about three weeks...
