Pitting Edema?

Hi all,

I had a client the other day who has a kidney condition that is causing mild pitting edema in his lower legs and feet. He wants some deep work on his feet, but I told him it was contraindicated. I just did very light effleurage over that area (feet and lower legs).

Is there anything that I can do fo him?

What is his kidney condition? A chat w/his doc would be helpful, if he'll agree to it.

They're not sure what is going on with his kidneys, but urinalysis shows high levels of protein. He says that acupuncture is what helps him the most. When he was having the acupuncture, his protein levels went back down.

I doubt his doc would have time to talk to me. Unfortunately, I live in a place where we have a terrible shoreforum.xxxe of physicians, so the ones we do have are horribly overworked (therefore unlikely to want to talk to a massage student). However, maybe I should try.

The following are 2 Jin Shin Jyutsu techniques that might help your client with his kidneys...............

1] with R hand gently grasp index finger of L hand and hold --- may be perception of movement/circling/whatever --- hold until movement ceases (or for those that don't feel "it" - hold about a minute minimum) then repeat w/ L index finger being held w/ R hand

2] while in a seated position reach behind L knee with R middle finger and place that finger in the center of the knee bend [usually there is a divot/indentation at the precise point] --- do the same thing at the same time w/ L middle finger behind R knee ---- hold until movement ceases (or at least 1 minute if you don't feel "it" moving).

These 2 techniques help kidney and bladder function and strength. My clients and I have used them quite often with good results in reducing fluid retention w/out harmful results. They MIGHT be of assistance to your client as well.

I definitely feel like you are selling yourself short.

If nothing else, you can speak to or leave a detailed message regarding your concerns and questions with the doctors nurse. Also, leave a number where you can be reached or a message can be left.

It is worth it to find out what you can do in order to help your client.

If they don't call back, at lease you know you tried.
