Physical contact...

[The ready set = ?]

Hi all

This may seem silly - and maybe I'm the only one thinking it!!! - but am wary of how weird it will be touching the naked skin of a stranger for the first few times?!

I plan on doing the ITEC holistic massage course this year and am interested in eventually learning all sorts of complimentary therapies, but I keep looking at all sorts of people and trying to imagine massaging them, and it seems strange!

I just wondered if this is normal, or should I reconsider trying for a career in holistic therapy?

Any advice/experiences welcome x

its a bit strange at first but it is the same for everyone, funnily enough I dont think to much of the person as such just concentrating on doing a good job, and sorting out the problems, you dont normally get to see a whole body of flesh at once because of the towels so you just get to a section at a time....

even when you are starting and are not sure of what you are doing trying to flow with your touch and show confidence...it will improve your treatment and the person's perception of the treatment vastly...

Hello Star,

Have you tried to be on the receiving end yourself?
I practice Shiatsu and Reiki, and in both therapies the client stays clothed. I was feeling a bit nervous with my first 2-3 "meber of the public" clients, but it soon vanished way.

Hi Star, I'm sure you'll be just fine, anyway, you'll have plenty of time to practice on your fellow students and vice versa, that by the time you come to treat a new client, you'll be more used to it.

My friend did her massage course, and all the way through it you get to give treatments to your class mates, and them to you, which will help you lots.

Enjoy and don't worry about anything, it will be fine.

I think before you commit to a course and pay out your money you should try and get some experience. You could either look for a one day taster course or ask a few friends if you can give them an (untrained) massage, just go with the flow and don't worry about not being properly trained (keep it light though!) and see how you feel. And boyfriends don't count!

I would seriously think about it. Obviously if you are going to be a massage therapist then you need to make physical contact and there are other aspects that you might not have considered, such as occasional body odour problems, excess weight, hair, and various other body stuff![&:]

What makes you want to do the job? That's the question really and can you get past the issue?[:-]

Thanks for the reply Candie - I posted that a couple of weeks ago and already I feel differently - have been doing lots of reading and my interest is over taking my worries!
