patch test

Hi everyone, just been reading a book about ear candling in which the author made an interesting statement about aromatherapy.

Quote "in aromatherapy a patch test is usually carried out".
[sm=scratchchin.gif]Now ihaven't been practising aromatherapy for very long, but can definately say that i was not trained to carry out patch tests on clients before commencing treatments. So i was just wondering if there are any aromatherapists who do carry out such tests.I can see the reasoning behind this, i just can't see how its practical, as you would presumably have to carry out a consultation, decide on an appropiate blend, do a patch test then send them away for 24 hours before carrying out the actual treatment. Just wanted to know what the general feeling was about this.

I'm studying aromatherapy now and patch tests are certainly part of the ITEC course - though the tutor couldn't explain how it would ever be practical to carry one out! I suppose if someone had serious allergies it would be sensible, though probably easier just to use different oils. Another example of fear of litigation...?

In college we were told that we had to carry out patch tests 24 hours before treatment - we basically did a top note and a base note as a guideline (always thought it a pain - if a client reacts to one oil doesn't mean they will to a different one!). I posted a topic about this recently as I have just set up my own business and was worried about the viability of patch tests (I have got around this now ). Apparently now though I have heard that if a client has had aromatherapy or used oilsat anytime inthe past then there is no need to patch test them.
