U.S. researchers speculate that the rising tide of obesity in America could in part be related to the increasing use of plastic to pay for groceries.

They tracked the spending of 1,000 shoppers over six months and found that people paying for groceries with cards were more susceptible to impulse buys of food they knew was bad for them.
