organic sunflower oil

Hi
Could anyone tell me if you could use cold pressed, unrefined organic sunflower oil for massage. I have noticed this oil at the supermarket. It doesnt state on the bottle what its used for ie.. cooking, salads etc so i wondered if you could use as a base oil? It does state it has been cold pressed and is rich in Vitamin E.

Any comments would be appreciated

Hi Innerpeace,

I prefer organic cold pressed oils than the 'hot' or chemically processed (i.e. grapeseed) oils.
If it's unrefined, I think it means it has not been filtered and you may find some sediments at the bottom of the bottle. I prefer the unrefined type as it contains whole goodness and I don't like to put stuff on my body unless I can eat them. I think it's a personal choice.

Sunflower oil tends to be 'greasy' to touch if you were to compare with Vit E 'sticky' so you may want to mix with other oils to get the right consistency/grip. Of course, you can use sunflower oil alone though. Apprently, massage grade oils are better than the food quality oils because food grade oils are processed further to remove bit of this and that to make it taste better and less smelly etc (basically bland oil)andit loses goodness through this process.

I have a good booklet on a wide range of base oils , the proper ones for massage lol but was just wondering if the unrefined type were ok to use . I imagined them being ok for swedish massage but wasnt sure if they would work as well with aromatherapy. I dont know if essential oils would loose theraputic properties when blended with something bought from the supermarket as opposed to using the right base oil bought from a reputable wholesaler/salon.

Hi Innerpeace,

I've been using organic, cold pressed sunflower oil as my massage oil for over 7yrs. It's fab for anyone even those with nut allergies. It blends well with all essential oils and is absorbed well by the skin. It's easily sourced and well priced. I go through approx 2Lts per month. I can say enough about it!!.

Yes itsquite cheap compared to the price i pay for certain massage base oils which again was a reason i asked if it would be ok to use. I dont want to loose out on quality. I'm glad you have found it ideal to use yourself for the past 7 years. I think i will give it a go now and see how i feel about it . It looks nice and gloopy which is what i prefere usingii dont like anything too thin or oilythat gives too much slide. Do you mix yours with anything?

Being an aromatherapist I blend essential oils using the Sunflower as my base oil. It's fab for the deep tissue work I do.

Hi Jobloackcat,

I get mine from Revital Health Food Store, Fresh & Wild or Waitrose although Holland and Barrett sometimes has some.

There are 2 brands - Meridian 500ml @ £2.50 and ClearSpring 500ml £2.50 and 1Lt £3.90 approx. depending on where you buy it.
