Odd Person

I still consider myself a new student.

I've taken 3 classes so far and I am currently taking 2 more, concurrently.

My question is this:

Have any of you ever had an 'odd' person in your class, specifically, and I am SO sorry to the guys here.. but, and odd male classmate? It is important to note the sex of the student because of the nature of the comments I have heard he has made in other classes.

Now, I have had other classes with men and everything was perfectly fine, as have the other female students who commented about his behavior. There are more than a few female students who feel that he is going to massage school to be able to touch women and possibly find a date.

So I suppose my question is 2 fold, not only if you have had an odd student male OR female (read that as - questionably inappropriate at times) but also how would you handle it?

I encountered a few "odd" folks in school, but they were "quirky" sort of odd, not "creepy" sort of odd. So, I do not have any personal experience like you are encountering. However, my recommendation would be to approach the appropriate personnel at the school with your concerns. First, I would document dates and comments that he makes. I would also ask a few other students who have heard these comments to approach the school personnel as well. It is my opinion that the school has an obligation to provide a safe learning environment.

I suppose it depends on your school, but the school I went to weeded those students out very quickly. The first few ethics classes were depressing enough to them that they just quit. :roll: It was made VERY clear that professionalism would be maintained at all times. Those who were not interested in professionalism dropped out or flunked out.

If the school isn't proactive about it, document and confront the individual, and if that doesn't help, take the documentation to the school and ask them to take care of it.

Chain of command. Talk to the teachers first, then the administrator and then the director. Don't want to make someone look bad that may not be aware of the situation.

Problem is a lot of schools now are based on federal student loans and recruit people that can "qualify" rather than draw people that want to be LMTs. They are not really interested in screening. They are interested in head count. Thus, after 10 years..... I quit. :banghead: It didn't start out that way.

Well, I am going to see how things go. If I detect any weirdness, I am not going to put up with it, that is for sure. I'm not spending my time and resources to get felt up and harassed.

Here's hoping he minds his P's and Q's!

Not to name names of course, but I used to work for a massage school and heard about a male student who had seemed like a great guy, very professional, until his first week of clinic where apparently his hands roamed "too low below the clavicle" if you get my drift.. on a female client. I was totally shocked, he risked his potential career (he was expelled, charged with sexual assault, and can never become a therapist in Texas) just for a totally inappropriate grope. So while there are some great male therapists out there, people do need to be careful and be concerned.

"Careful" and "concerned" of just male MT's? What exactly are you implying?

I don't know if you realize it or not but that statement is pretty loaded.

As a teacher I have met my share of "Odd" female students and MT's as well as males. To say one should be careful and concerned only of males in the Massage biz is highly prejudicial. I hope that wasn't your intention.

To address the OP's question, when inappropriateness occurs in the setting of a massage school that person, male or female, needs to be addressed, confronted and if the accusations are correct, asked to leave the school setting.

I have to agree. Females can be just "shady" as any male. Two of the best massages I have ever had have been from two different male MT's. Never judge a book by its cover nor a MT by their gender. Once the general public gets that male MT's will be better off. I know,there will always be the ones that won't like a person of the same sex massaging them. I have had a VERY bad experience with a male MT but I didn't judge them all by that one creep.

I can't speak for Jen, but the Careful and Concerned remark she made I felt was on the same par as 'buyer beware' - at least that is how I took it. Of course we all need to be careful and concerned because there are some crazy people out there!

That's totally how I meant that. Nothing meant to imply anything against males, it was just in that situation.
