Notes During Massage?

Before each session I review a client's history and past session notes. I also chart soap notes after each session. Sometimes my mind comes and goes and I am scared I may forget something. Do any of you carry the client's chart in the massage room with you and make notes DURING the session?

I try to chart right away after the session, and I do take my SOAP form (and their chart) with me, so that I can glance at notes made during the intake conversation, but I never stop the massage to make notes in the middle. I understand the thought, but think it would be irritating to the client.

This isn't brain surgery, so if we don't have an absolute precise account to the minutest detail, nobody will die. (gentle tease, as I have perfectionistic tendencies too!!!)

I don't chart "during." What kinds of things are you worried about forgetting?

Very occasionally, if I am doing a new injury case, and the doc has sent over notes that complicate the case, such as a pre-existing condition. Otherwise, no. I just do the notes during intake, then immediately after the session make the rest of the notes.

I worked with a Dubbing practitioner who wrote notes durning the massage on occasion, and the massage still flowed fine.

I write my chart notes afterward.

Thanks for the input MTs! I also agree about the notes taking away from the massage. I have only thought of doing this when the massage is more medically centered and I have notes to review as well as maybe new things to add. Sometimes clients tell me once I get in the room, "oh yea, I forgot to tell you...." I usually do okay to jot down notes immediately after leaving room and washing my hands (while client is relaxing and getting dressed). Thanks for sharing!!!
