newly trained aromatherapist, please advice

hi everyone [sm=wave.gif]i've been searching a good forum for the past few months, and i think this site is fab!
as a newly trained aromatherapist (well...passed my college exam, still waiting for my itec result) i'm abit lost about my direction what to do next.

i have also just finished my beauty itec, so i would love to work in a salon for a while to gain some experince. but what about my aromatherapy skills? i know salons don't want aromatherapist, right?

i've trained with 40 oils with itec, and to be honest i don't feel confident to work as mobile and charge people yet. is there anyway i can may be work as a volunteer, while working as beauty therapist in a salon? i heard NHS does, but i really don't think i can treat "patient" yet. [sm=nono.gif]

i love aromatherapy and i worked really hard throughout the course. it's just the way we've taught via itec doesn't make my feel professional enough to treat people with problems. am i worrying too much?

i would also like to learn more about clinical aromatherapy, is there more advance course i can take after my itec?

Hi there and welcome to HP.

Well I'm an aromatherapist and practice my holistic therapies in a salon on a freelance basis, so yes, salons do want aromatherapists.

I think this is more about your confidence, apart from anyone else. One of my fellow students did some volunteer work in our local cancer unit straight after training - they did their own training as well however.

There are lots of advanced courses around - I'm not familiar with ones in Scotland, so you could book yourself on one of these before treating 'the paying public' and just work on friends and family to build up your confidence.

As far as volunteering is concerned, you may wish to contact The Christie Hospital. If you do a search on 'Christie Hospital Aromatherapy' on Google, you will find loads of information as they have won awards for the complementary health service in their cancer unit. They do their own training also.

You could also find out about other hospitals or hospices in your locality. Again, if you know what the Local Health Authority is called, you can just do a search on that.
